I wanted to kno if there is a best way to pick up our little guys.....

I was told I could pick a rabbit up by the back of they neck is this true?? I feel it might hurt him???

Hi Snickers,

Rabbits don't like being picked up by the scruff of the neck.

Slide a hand under their body and up to their chest and make sure yousupport the back end so their back isn'thurt.Putting a hand under their back feet makesthem feel secure and prevents kicking and scratching.

Keep in mind too that most rabbits don't likebeing held. At all. I've had detrimental effects trying to pick up oneof my rabbits, she would run away from me and it took weeks to undo thedamage.

However, there are times we need to hold them, such as nail clipping time and whatnot.

2 of 3 of mine LOVE to be held!! The3rd doesn't hate it..he's just too busy to be bothered! Supportingtheir backfeet is key to making them more comfortable with it!

Brindle is our easiest bun to pick up. The others like to be handled/petted/loved, but NOT picked up.

I slip my hand under her chest area between her legs. Then I scoop upher tush and support her hind legs. I also make sure that I hold herclose to me while carrying her so she feels secure. I reverse theprocess to return her to her cage.If she freaks for anyreason I cover her eyes and talk softly to her and she calms down.

I learned to hold them as you would afootball. My female likes to be held like that. Mymale likes to be held like a baby. I hold his rump with onehand and he puts his head under my chin. (I used my otherhand to hold his upper body close to my chest). Just hold them firmlyso they feel secure.

I saw someone last night pick up a rabbit at a pet store by theEARS!! I was SOOOOooooo upset. I had to get out ofthere!! Then I saw a kid drop a guinea pig from about 4 feetinto his cage!! Some people are so clueless!!Grrrr....

(Sorry to rant and rave....but I was afraid those poor animals would be hurt!!) :X

I would definatley prefer not to pick up yourbun from the scruff on the neck. If I'm not mistaken..it could reallyhurt your bun and may even cause neck injury. Especially picking themup from there ears! =0

The best way to pick up your bun is by sliding your hand under theirbody and then carefully support their butt so that they won't get hurt. That's how I have always picked up Emmy and never there has been anytrouble.

Take care & good luck

Katy

Scruff carries should be supported at the rearend, and not recommended for large breeds. It can indeed hurt shouldertissue. However, I usea form ofthattechniquefor adolescents and struggling animals. Just makesure things are well supported--Pam can explain the judges' hold better!
