So does everyone remember Phoenix, my handsome little cockatiel who hatched this summer? He's been doing great- has gained weight, is completely fearless, loves toys, has the most hilarious personality, and in the past few days has started hitting puberty and is almost constantly making the weirdest sounds as he tests his voice. I keep checking to make sure he isn't choking on something! It's quite cute. If we turn on Christmas music he sings along.
Anyway, there's something wrong with his eye He was fine last night but when I checked on him this morning, the feathers around his eye were all disheveled and he had some goobies on his eye. I got them off with a moistened Q-tip. He had a couple little feathers touching his eye and a couple of his eyelashes were curled upwards against it, so I got those straightened out. The good thing is the eye itself doesn't look irritated and neither does the surrounding area. I'm really hoping it will be okay. We're keeping an eye on it (ha!) for now and I will call the vet tomorrow morning if it doesn't get better.
I have several concerns here. Most of all, of course, I'm worried about his comfort and health. Second, we're scheduled to fly to Paul's parents' house on Friday for Christmas and I'm afraid we won't get a decent vet by then (there's one terrible vet at the clinic who for some reason is the only one available when we've had emergencies in the past- she killed Phoenix's brother). Third, I'm afraid if he needs eye ointment we will have to cancel our trip because I'm quite certain our pet sitter would be incapable of putting eye ointment on him or giving him medicine (he has little experience with animals). Last Christmas we had to cancel our Christmas trip to my mom because of Skyler's EC diagnosis, and 2 years ago we had to cancel the Christmas trip to my dad because Rory ate a poisonous plant hours before I was supposed to leave. All of these cancellations waste a LOT of money since they all involved plane tickets, not to mention simply missing Christmas. We can't take Phoenix with us because while the plane trip is only 1 hour, I don't want to stress him if he's sick.
So everyone please keep Phoenix in your thoughts and hope he gets better soon!
