We she got fixed today she si still not eating yet should I be worried or not she got her pain killer but she is still not eating and I am having to force water so she does not get dehydrated. Am I being to over protective should I give her another day or not. She just got fixed today but I am a little worried. I feel like this is chevy al over again.

Help frantic mom :pullhair::nurse::in tears:

I'm not sure how old your dog is, but I've had lots of dogs fixed when they are seniors... like 10 - 14 years for retired mill doggies... just watch her very carefully. If she is not eating yet that is O.K... water of course is super important, make sure she does not get dehyrated, as you are doing. If she is not eating in the morning or drinking on her own at a much better pace, call your Vet - or during the night if you feel something is really not right. It's hard surgery on older doggies, but as long as she is healthy otherwise she should be fine. I've had doggies with cancer and heart problems get fixed as seniors and some have had a bit of a hard time, but always been O.K.

It's normal and good to worry though - and like I said watch her carefully.

Thanks she is 15 months old so she is young and very healthy. she has never handled pain well LOL she is a wimp. She i am still worried I will give her tel tomorrow thanks for the help any moe would be great

Oh heavens she's a baby! LOL When you said "older" I think OLD like 18! LOL because that's what I'm used too! She should be just fine then!! In my opinion anytime under 6 years is young enough LOL. :)

Everything still applies, but there is a lot less risk, and if she had pain meds than hopefully she is not too uncomfortable. Good luck, I hope she heals up just fine :)

Thnkas for the suport Bruiser my chi is ony 3 months so thats why I say older.

She is young I think she is not used to meds in her sustem either she had a reactiuon to her first set of puppy shots and has never had a nother set. she had her rabies but she is notused to meds of any kind she is very healthy. I do think it is more the pain though but she is wagging her tail now looking at me so mabye she will turn around over night needless to say i have a pallet by her kennel tonight my old man is going to have a cow when he comes in in the morning and I am sleeping right by her kennel on the floor needless to say. I will do that for about 4 days I did it with chevy now her and bruiser when the time comes When he is a year old I will not contribute to the over population of animals in this world All my are mutts or no papers so ni baby makers as i tell my 4 year old nefew who wanted to play with her today.

We said phoenix had her baby makers out today she does not want to play and he said ok and went about his bussiness the best explanation to a 4 year old no more question no birds and bee talk to young it worked really well he has a 2 year old sister and another on the way.

Chevy Dodge Mom,

Do I understand that your pup also received some vaccinations after her surgery today as well? Sometimes the shots can cause a mild reaction which isn't dangerous, but can cause them to sometimes run a low grade fever, and feel especially rotten....on top of the surgery.

I wouldn't worry too much about her tonight. It will take at least 24 hours for the effects of the anesthesia to get out of her system....if I remember correctly. As long as she doesn't start throwing up or behaving in some other way that causes you concern... if she doesn't eat or drink until morning I am sure she'll be fine.

Usually the vets office won't release a dog to you after surgery until they have had a first drink of water and a little food anyway. So maybe she had some at the vets office and along with feeling so bad, just isn't hungry or thristy.
If you have a can of chicken and rice soup on hand you could mix that with a little water and see if she'll lap up a little. It's soothing to their stomach and provides them with electrolites.

Keep us posted.....and hugs to your baby. Hope this helps.

Terri

Thanks no she did not hav shots but they gave her antibiotics and the meds that she got to nock her out for the surgry I guess what I ment was that they might have a worse efect in her then most dogs cause she never had shots. My mom gave her some chicken and she ate I cant sleep to worried about her LOL. She ate the chicken and drank some water they are like my kids And if something happen to them it would be like loosing a child to me.

So I am a little worry wart My mom said I am OCD about them I gave her a very detelled list for today while I worked onher truck. She said you would think that you are running a bussness they are on a a strict sheduale and I give a lot of details to anyone who watches them even for a few hours. :biggrin2:

Your feelings are totally understandable. I always have a hard time leaving any of our "babies"/"children" at the vet for any amount of time.

Get some rest. Believe it or not Phoenix will rest better if you behave as normal as possible. Around here, my pets have come to expect me to be an insominac....its only when I crawl in bed by 10:00 that they think something is wrong with me.

Just curious.....did the vet suggest putting Vitamin E or anything on the incision while it heals? Most times, especially this soon after surgery it's best to leave the incision alone and either let her take care of it, and just don't let it get really wet if she has to go outside. Don't want to her lick it too much as she could undo a stitch...but most dogs will leave the incision alone.

No I did the same thing for chevy it helped him leave it alone.

She has 3 layers of stitching first 2 are stitches the very top layer the one that we see is glue. She is doing good we took a nap tegether I was on the floor with chevy and just fell asleep my mom put chevy up and me and phoenix slept about 3 hours strate
