I have no idea how prevalent this is, but since I've heard of it a couple of times now, thought I'd bring up the subject just as a warning to dog owners.
I live in Ottawa, and my dog goes everywhere with me. I walk her every day, and part of our routine is a quick stop at the local Tim Horton's so I can pick up a coffee on the way home. I tie her to the fence in front of the store where I can keep an eye on her through the window while I am ordering my coffee.
A few months ago my sister told me that she'd heard a woman had her dog stolen after she left him outside a store; apparently someone walked up, untied the leash and walked away with the dog. I was upset over hearing this and appreciated that she told me, though I told her that I keep an eye on Kaya whenever she is waiting for me outside the store.
Yesterday I stopped at the store after walking Kaya again, and after I came out and was untying her, a woman approached me and said that she no longer does this. She told me that recently she had done the same as me, and as she was in the store waiting, she saw a man walk up to her dog. At first she thought he was petting the dog, but then she saw him untying the leash...so she ran out of the store screaming and yelling at him to let go of her dog. I asked her what she did after that, and she became a bit sheepish and then said in a low voice, "I slugged him. Hard". (Good for her!) And I was so appreciative that she took the time to stop and tell me what had happened, for it made the threat of my dog actually being stolen more real to me. She said her dog was not small...110 lbs...and the guy who tried to take her wasn't a kid, he was an adult.
I grew up in a time when you could leave your house unlocked and break-ins were a rarity...and people didn't walk away with your dog if you left him or her tied outside of a store for a few moments. But those days are gone, and I am thankful to be reminded of this before it actually happened.
So if you've been like me, be careful out there...it would be a horrible way to lose a friend.
