I have a pregnant doe that somehow came down withvent disease. She's due with her litter any day now. I had to give hera shot of pen g to get rid of it. I was wondering if it would have anyeffect on the babies? I think she mightve picked this up at the lastshow I took her to. The buck I bred her to, and none of the others areshowing any signs of it. Ive administered pen g to rabbits before, butnever a pregnant doe.

You're really left with no choice other than totreat the pregnant doe if it is indeed vent disease becausethekits can contract the disease through the placenta laterin pregnancy or during kindling by contact withlesions on thegenitals.

The doe most likely contracted it through the buck (or from a buck at aprevious breeding). Not all rabbits will showsymptoms. It is highly unlikely that your doe could havepossibly picked it up at a show.

So should I treat everyone for it? This was thefirst time I had ever used that buck, and he's out of my own rabbits. And its the first time ive ever bred the doe. I got her back fromanother breeder that Isold her to last year, and she neverbred her to any of her rabbits. I know this can be some nastystuff. My rabbits picked it up a few years back, and i had to cull veryhard for it. I read some where that they could pick it up through urinecontact, so I assumed that getting it from a show would be possible. How many days should I treat her? This is a doe I really cant afford tocull either.

I would first have her tested at the vet forsyphilis, rather than unnecessarily treating all the rabbits in theherd. Vent disease is sometimes hard to discern from otherbacterial infections.
Rabbit syphilis is not known to be spread through urine.

Well im in a situation where I cant afford a vetright now cause I am currently un-employed. I was fired from my joblast week. The best rabbit vet we have around here is an animalhospital that charges and arm and a leg for exotic visits. It has gonedown since I gave her the pen g. what she had was that her whole ventarea was swollen and looked infected. At first i thought it was becauseof her pregnancy. But then I figured that she shouldnt swell to be thatbig.
