About 6 months after I had started volunteering at the shelter we were waiting to see if Petco had given us a grant to pay for the spay/neuter of our rabbits. Petco had already agreed to start the bunny program at the Onalaska Wi. store which meant that the rabbits that sat in a small back room at the shelter would be exposed to the public and have a better chance of being adopted. Petco had already stopped ordering from Marshall Farms and we were just waiting for all to fall into place.
Their were 3 rabbits at the shelter Buck, Pudgy (Peewee) and Spunky.
People balked at adopting because we required that the adopter spay/neuter their rabbits and a lot of people did not want to spend the money doing this.
I spent a lot of time with these rabbits and they were all dear to my heart.
Pudgy (peewee) was shy and didnot like to be held.
One day I got a call from the volunteer coordinator who told me that she had to tell me something upsetting. She said that since the program had not been accepted yet that one of the rabbits had to be PTS...several of the staff had gone to the room and attempted to handle each rabbit. It was determined that Pudgy was the hardest to handle and that he would be PTS within 24 hrs.
Well I can honestly say that I just about died. My stomach just aboutfell out from under me. I felt sick.
My husband was standing there when I got the call and I guess I turned white..anyway right then and there I begged him to let me adopt Pudgy.
I already had 5 rabbits and thought that was enough but I couldn't let this happen.
I went to the shelter immediately and did the paperwork and got him out of there that day.
He is a true gem ..I renamed him Peewee because he was much smaller then.
He still doesn't like to be picked up but he loves to stretch out and have his whole body massaged. He loves me more than any of the other rabbits (except maybe the new one Gabriel)
Peewee is my heart.
Anyway Buck was the first rabbit to go to Petco and Spunky was also adopted so things worked out for all three and I got Peewee who is sitting directly behind me at the computer this very minute. Happy Ending!!!
Now let see if I can download the pics
