Paddington is my grand daughter's 4 month old mini lop rabbit that developed a face abcess. It has been lanced, flushed repeatedly, and 4-6 weeks of chloropalm prescribed. Vet refuses to even read articles on Pen B. Abcess flacid as far as we can tell with no repeated build up of pus, chloropalm well tolerated. Legal antibiotic in Canada but not USA. Question - The vet tells me that this animal is to quarantined for life, not interaction with any other animal. That seems unreasonable as they didn't swab the infection and have no idea if the abcess will return or what caused it. They think it may have been a result of insect bite and the heat. Only animals that she has ever had contact with are her parents and siblings. Do you feel lifetime quarantine is warranted.

I'd be sure to get a second oppinion first to be sure. If they didn't swab it and you have doubts in your mind, then check with someone else to be sure.

Ripley is just so cute. I found a thread from rabbits online from Feb 2011 from isabelly - Abcess on chin. Her vet gave her chlorpalm and angieluv wrote "Chlopalm is a great drug for a rabbit with an abcess because it crosses the blood brain barrier and is capable of getting to the core of the abcess ( many drugs cannot)." I feel better about the drug of choice at this point. Will be watching this abcess closely and if any change will be insisting on Benzathine Pencillin that is available here if I have to purchase it online.
