Does anyone know why Petco and Petsmart stopped carrying Oxbow? Did they quit all together? I was sure they always had it, but then recently I've been looking into switching to Oxbow and they didn't have any at either store. I know our vet carries it, so I can get it there, it was just strange the other two don't have it anymore. :?

I can't remember if it's Petco or Petsmart that still has it...I think it's petco. At least in Texas...I went to a few pet stores until I found one that had it. I use a local store, though, and they only carry Oxbow.

I asked and they said not enough people were buying it because it was more expensive.

I get it by 50 pound bags but I had been getting the oxbow treats at petsmart.

Dang, it sucks that Oxbow lost such a big distributor... Smaller, local stores usually carry it. That's how I get mine, I work at Rocky Mountain Tails in Calgary. You meet some great people though those types of stores too, I would recommend looking around.

hmm, maybe guess I looked on the website and didn't even see it listed there.

The question is, if I have 2 bunnies and got the 50# bag, that might make it do-able for us to switch to Oxbow, but would the pellets stay fresh enough? What if I was able to keep at lesat some of the extra's cool?

Wow, ok I feel pretty dumb now. I just went onto petsmart's website and they DO have Oxbow still. I don't know why I didn't see it before, but it's still there. :foreheadsmack: But looking at it, they're more expensive than Dr's Foster and Smith. I'll have to ask our vet how much it is there.

I can get Oxbow at Petsmart and Pet Food Express here. I go to Pet Food Express because I try to give those big chains as little of my business as possible plus its cheaper at Pet Food. I'm trying it out again on Harvey, seems like he's eating it this time.

I'm also trying out Sherwood Forest Natural Rabbit food. See if he likes that.

I've seen it at petco (I think) around here. I'm actually working on my oxbow order sheet tonight. They offer veterinary student discounts so it looks like Timmy is going to be a very spoiled bunny for the next 4 years.

I buy online from Drs. Foster and Smith...they also have really good quality timothy hay. I buy in bulk and shipping is free. They have a good selection of Oxbow products.

My local PetSmart has cut way back on all their small animal/exotic supplies, including Oxbow, especially rabbit supplies. They used to have a good selection of toys but no more:(

you can keep pellets fresher for longer by keeping a portion of them in the freezer :)

I keep some in a tupperware cereal dispenser for daily feedings and then keep the rest frozen.

I get a 50lb bag from petfooddirect. I had a problem with pellets a few months ago so I emailed Oxbow about storage. Their response was not to store in the frig/freezer as this could introduce moisture & cause pellets to break down. I have split a 50lb bag into 2 gallon bags & put into frig for years without a problem. Mine is used up anywhere from 2-4 months depending on lots of variables.

aha, so this is where I commented about freezing the food (couldn't remember where to go back and edit)... found out later last night that the freezer is actually a no-no, but the fridge is ok according to http://www.3bunnies.org/feeding.htm#pellets (which has some other tips on preserving pellet food as well)
