Hi...

My bunny has just been diagnosed with a chronic disease (tearing problem) and vet told me its a permanent issue..

So now, i'm trying to get my bunny's immune system back up after 2months+ of anti-btiotics.. I just bought the Oxbow Immune Support tablets (which is more like a mini cookie!) Hopefully, this will prevent infection on her eye. She had an infection before, but it cleared up.

However, my bunny is very choosy and she is refusing to touch the tablet.. anybody have any idea on how i can get my bunny to eat the tablet? Its quite a huge tablet with a herbal smell. she will not eat it with her pellets too.. Can i spread some banana (or other fruits) on the tablet and see whether she will take it?

Thanks~

Can you crush it & put it with banana?

I would get benebac or another pro-biotic & put some in her water. If it's in a capsule form, open a capsule & sprinkle a little into the water & stir before you give it to her. Maybe add a little unsweetened juice to the water so she'll drink it.

This product contains 18.5% protein. According to Dr Moore's Rabbit Nutrition ..., rabbits who aren't lactating, large breeds, or long-haired should get 12-16% protein. It further states that excess protein is bad for the liver & kidneys & may cause digestive upsets.

Of course a week or so of additional protein probably would be ok.

If you are looking for something else, this is what I use. My buns love it. I sprinkle some over pellets in the morning and then in with Becky's medicine at night. She has chronic health issues from early abuse in her life.

The vet looked at the ingredients and said it was safe. I have been using it daily for almost a year.

I guess the amount of onion & garlic in it must be minimal. Also has cabbage & spinach.

She's never gotten gas from it. I was concerned about that as well. I think each ingredient is very minimal per dose.

The great thing is that from using this daily I was able to stop using the antibiotic eye drops for her chronic runny eyes. The vet thought she would be on them the rest of her life. Her eyes have been clear for 6 months.

Brandy, I'm glad it seems to have been so successful for you. I just know it's impossible to show cause & effect with what happens with one rabbit, person,or whatever. I don't suppose someone with a dozen or more rabbits would be willing to randomly assign them to treatment or control & monitor the health of each for at least a year. Science is grand, but impractical at times.

Going off topic, I see the site has dgl. I personally recommend chewing a tablet before bedtime for anyone with acid reflux & a half hour before eating anything spicy or acidic. I don't know what it'd do for a rabbit. DGL is licorice that has the chemical removed that increases blood pressure. So dgl is short for de-g______ized licorice.

Thanks so much for all the replies.

I did crushed up the tablet and mixed with her fav. banana (she go crazy for banana). However, she refused to touch it, even with her banana!! I did have pro-biotic pellets with banana flavours, and she only ate abit of those... my bunny is so choosy, she will only take pure fresh banana.. >.< and will not eat anything she don't want to.

I'd love to try the products recommended by Oxy Rabbit and MiniLopHop but they dont sell here in my country, and i'm not sure if my bunny will take it..

I will try the crush tablet with banana again tonight, maybe putting more banana this time.. hopefully she will take it.

Junie is very picky, too. We wanted her to start taking a papaya tablet each day to help with fur digestion, but of course she wouldn't take it! I just left it in her food bowl for a couple days. She finally tried it and now she loves them. Maybe just leave it in her cage somewhere for a couple days and see what she does.

I agree, sometimes buns are suspicious of new foods. I just got new berry flavored snacks for the kids and it took them a couple days to give them a try. Now they beg for it.

Thanks for the advice!! I shall leave the tablet in her food bowl.. Hopes she tries it :)
