Hello everyone! I have been on here before but I decided to make a different name.
Anyway, I work at the pet store and yesterday a woman came in with six babies, all just a day old. She said that she had to get rid of them because the mother was trying to eat them... so I said I would take them. They had little cuts and blood spots from where mom was picking on them, but nothing major.

I have bred rabbits for the past 10 years, so I have quite a bit of head-knowledge about them in general. Just a few months ago I got rid of all of my rabbits because I am heading off to college soon, and I don't plan on keeping these babies when (and if...) they grow up.

But anyway. I got all of the babies home and I have been keeping them in a cardboard box with a thick towel (I formed a dip in it). Here was my first mess-up though. I bought this fluffy bedding made for rodents and I put it in with my babies, thinking that they would find it to be like mom's fur that she pulls out. But when I woke up the next day, one of the babies had some of the fluff bedding wrapped around their front paw. It took me a while, but I got it off. At first, the paw was dark purple, although throughout the day it has swelled up and it is reddish pink. Will he be okay?? Needless to say I tossed the fluff bedding... is there something that might work better?

Also, I have been feeding them from a bottle 2x a day (11AM and 11PM) because mom rabbits normally feed their babies only at night, right? And I read that it's very easy to cause them to bloat, and that overeating is the #1 cause of death. I've also been feeding them kitten milk replacement, but I know there's a better recipe out there... I seem to have lost it though =/ In one feeding, how much are they supposed to eat? I have been feeding them until they seem to get tired of it... My last question is, when I'm trying to make them pee, I use a cotton ball with warm water on it. I got them all to pee the first day I had them, but I've only gotten a couple to pee after that. How often are they supposed to pee?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just really want them to make it. They all look fine, in my opinion... They are nearly 3 days old now. Thanks!

You will find most of your answers here: Feeding Orphaned babies

The website that I link to in that post has the amounts to feed, etc.

I use felt type material in my nests (sometimes) - because there are no strings that they can get wrapped around them. I'm not sure what else to suggest.

I'm not sure about the injury - I've had babies get injured and then recover - from getting string wrapped around their leg (before I used felt) - so I would think it probably has a pretty good chance.

Good luck with the babies.

I have pm'd you because we ask that users keep ONE name and account and we need a moderator to merge your names into one account.
