Hi. Longtime lurker here. I'm in need of some.guidance and advice. I have a bunny who I noticed over a month ago that she was sneezing a lot more than she usually does, mind you she already sneezed often. It was normal.for her. But one day I came.home and noticed thick, white discharge from her left nostril. By the time.I got her into the vet it was already going away but she was prescribed baytril which she did two rounds of because her nose cleared up but then during the end of the first round she got shotty again for a day.

At the time I was using pretty dusty hay instead of the usual bale I get from.the farm.store. My gut told me.it was the hay, seeing as my 4 other rabbits never sneeze and live with infected bunny. It's been a month and she has been fine, still.sneezing but without discharge. Also keep.in mind she never had clear discharge that then progressed to white discharge, it was white from.the start. But recently randomly she will.have snot in only her left nostril but the day next be fine. She has it again now. The vet told me she might have something stuck up her nose and to get a saline spray to put up her nose. Since she was fine at the time I never did it.

But now that she is I am planning to make a saline solution and drop a couple in her nose. I use essential oils.often and the thought came to me to add a drop of Oregano essential oil to the saline solution to.help with her infection. My gut tell me it will.help but I want a second opinion. I only use doterra oils which is the highest, purest grade out there. And it has been proven that oregano essential oil can kill bacteria. Has anyone done something like this before?

She is my baby and I want to give this a shot before I take her back to the vet who isn't savvy because I live in a small.place and spend a small.fortune on xrays and.cultures. All five bunnies.are house bunnies and none of the other bunnies have shown.any symptoms like.her so something tells.me.it's not.really.sniffles. Please help.

The discharge would be clear if it was from allergies, white discharge indicates an infection. It's possible she wasn't on the baytril for long enough (how long is two rounds? I've read that 2 weeks to 1 month is about the usual course), or something else might need to be tried.

Also, just because your other rabbits aren't showing signs, doesn't mean that they aren't infected if it is pasteurella. Many rabbits infected with pasteurella won't show any symptoms until they are stressed or sick from something else and the infection is able to take more of a hold.

I can't make any recommendations regarding essential oils.

I agree with Azarene. Everything I've read always states that milky discharge is a sign of infection. If it's from dust or allergies, the discharge is clear.

I would honestly be leery about using essential oils just because the effects are unknown. What may be harmless to a person or another species, may be harmful to a rabbit. Unless you have confirmation from someone who knows what effect this would have on a rabbit, it might be best to err on the side of caution.

I've also heard that rabbits can be carriers of pastuerella and never show any symptoms. Many rescue rabbits are presumed to be carriers simply because they've been exposed to those showing symptoms (or to those just carrying).

The baytril dosage also left me wondering. :ponder:
