I know this is supposed to be for bunnies, but I know people on here care about animals besides bunnies too.
On my uncle's farm, a stray cat showed up about a year ago, and of course she wasn't fixed, and of course she started having kittens. Since this was right around the time that my grandmother was dying, the family just didn't get around to getting her spayed.
Well, there are around a dozen cats and kittens there now. My mom brought home one of the younger ones to get it tested for feline leukemia, and he tested postitive. Mom and I are really sad about it, this little kitten is the sweetest thing you would ever meet. For those of you who don't know about feline leukemia, I will explain a little about it. It kills their immune systems, similar to AIDS. It is passed in the same way as well, by mating or blood transfer, so thanfully it isn't extremely contagious. It is also passed from mother cats to their kittens, which pretty much means that all of these cats have it as they are all from the same mother.
Anyway, my mom is going to catch and bring home one more of them, and get both of them fixed and let them live out whatever time they have here. They usually live around two years or so, sometimes more, sometimes less.
What I am getting down to is this. The rest of these cats will be put to sleep, as there is no way we could afford to spay/neuter and give medical care to all of them. If there is anyone on here who would be willing to take even one of them, it would be one that didn't have to die. I want to make clear in advance, the odds of any of them not having this disease is slim, and like I said they would probably not live past two years old. I had one cat when I was a kid that had this, and he made it to three years old, but the vet was surprised by it.

If anyone would be willing, and I won't blame you if you aren't, please, please pm or email me or post it here and I will pm you.

Please check with your local county website or call and see if they have a ferral program. It is a program where humane societies catch ferral or stray cats, fixes them and sets them free. That way they do not reproduce and if you bring in a stray cat they fix them for free. We have one here which is also a rural area and our county just started it within the past few years. Best wishes. If someone wants to move this to off topics they can; for now I will leave it here so it will get seen.;)

:yeahthat

A Trap-Neuter-Release program might be able to help you. Although I think many euthanize feline leukemia positive cats so they don't continue to spread the disease. Still, it's worth a try. I'll pm you a link to more info.

Aww...how I wish I lived closer and could take another animal in...:(

My love to you and your mother for being so brave as to give these couple of babies a home for whatever time they have left. It's so hard to have an animal when you know it doesn't have much time. And my love also to all the kitties. That's so rough...but like Naturestee and Baci mentioned, there is most certainly some sort of organization around your area that can help you handle this, so you're not trying to do this alone.

Here are some sites I found that might be able to help:

You can ask these people (that are in your area) who you need to call, if nothing else:

Here's the number for Animal Control for DeKalb County. Whether you're in their area or not, they should be able to give you the appropriate number for your location:

Hope those helped!! :D

Hugs to you all!! Hang in there...you're doing the right thing. Let's see how we can all help you. :)
