Just wanted to share a recent experience that hopefully no one else goes through but can be prepared for just in case.
Shya is a two year old barely two pound dwarf/rex mix of some kind. She went to hop up on my hope chest and caught her eye on the corner of the lid actually tearing a hole in her cornea. I first noticed her eye because it was filled with blood and not just in the white part (scelera) of her eye. Upon further inspection (rolling her eyelid back) I noticed a bit of tissue poking through the slit on the top of her eye. Of course I freaked out but luckily I work for a people optometrist. My doc came over and looked at her. While it is an emergency it is one that can wait until morning. This happened over the weekend and I live in Germany currently. The dollar to Euro ratio is ridiculous and of course emergency vets are not a cheap visit. I kept her quiet until we could get to our regular vet where she was given antibiotics.
Symptoms hippity hoppity should go to the E-vet now in that type of situation are:
If the injury is located over the pupil, the iris can get pulled through the hole. That's bad.
The eye has a deflated/caved in look. That's even worse. Bun Bun will probably lose her eye
Of course not eating or drinking
If something like this were to happen in people the doc would medicate, watch, and put you on bed rest.
In people it takes about two weeks to absorb the blood out of the eye.
It's been three weeks and while there is improvement she still has quite a bit of blood left to absorb. The hole is mostly healed over.
Vet (and optometrist) said she would retain vision in her eye only because of where the injury was located
Got it you always get a vets opinion and while it could have been a very serious matter (and seemed that way to me at the time) it wasn't as serious as I thought it was.
