I am very thankful to be alive.
Took my car in for routine maintenance, which involved checking a loosebrake caliper and turning the rotors. The shop said the calipers werefine and wanted me to pay $700 to fix the struts (not worth it, oldcar).
Meanwhile, I'm driving to work after picking it up and the rattle ofthe caliper has now increased to a clunk-thud. I make it to work(driving 55 mph on potholed highways, I might add!) and call the shopfrom the parking lot. "The calipers are fine. Nice and tight. The noiseis from a strut with a cracked seal" they said.
I drive home. Rattle clunk THUD BANG BANG!
Call friend mechanic, who (bless him!) came over to our house at 9 pm.He drives the car, now going BANG CLUNK BANG!, starts looking worried, crawls the car into our driveway, parks, reaches behind the wheel andPULLS TWO BOLTS OUT OF THE WHEEL!
The repair shop had not re-attached the caliperafterturning the rotors. Parts could have fallen off andruined the wheel, or my right front brake could have given way. Andmetal parts littering the highway are deadly. I could easily have hador caused a major accident.
I was not a happy customer. My friend mechanic said it could have beena lawsuit. He fixed it free, and the shop gave me credit for futurefree maintenance.
Scary!
