OKay, so this is totally new for me.. as right now I am breeding for pets! BUT I was asked the other day about breeding rabbits for meat. Now, I dont know if I could possibly do this! I guess I just get so attached to the animals that I couldnt imagine doing it. Anyways, in your opinion, what breed do you think is best for meat rabbits? I know New Zealands are good (Or I have been told) and so are flemish Giants.

How much space wouuld you say a flemish giant would need? and would they get alond with my mini rex rabbits if properly bonded?

I don't know anything about meat rabbits... but to be "properly bonded" they would need to be fixed which kinda defeats the point if you're looking to breed.

New Zealands and Californians are the most common meat rabbit. They need less room than a Flemish Giant, which could also be used. However, I don't believe we can discuss breeding for meat on this forum.

I agree with Jennifer, if you want to bond them with your mini Rex, it kinda defeats the purpose if you want to use them for breeding, no matter what the purpose.

Hi Folks,

Just dropping in to ensure everyone is aware of the forum policy on meat-pen rabbit discussions....

We don't discuss dispatch/death, processing or consumption here.
Forum Decorum

However, there are a number of members who can provide information about the best housing and care options for larger breeds meant for meat pen showing, etc.

In regards to the OP's question, there would be no need to bond with the mini-rex, as that bond would be pointlessly damaged if the two animals were separated due to commercial interests.

Commercial production of any bun for meat pen or show can't really afford to involve bonding - too stressful for the animals involved, as they will ultimately be separated by breeding, or by going to new homes or places.

I appologize for that! And thank you for answering my question. I didnt think ti would be possible, so have decided to keep with my mini rex! :) I wil try to figure out how to delete this post, sothat it isnt on here anymore! I should have read that before posting this. I kknow I read it before, but totally forgot about this!

Not a concern, we talk about all aspects of care for all purposes. Folks raising meat rabbits are more than welcome - we just don't get into killing and consumption conversations.

This topic is fine ;)

Last study I read was New Zealands and Californians were the top two breeds raised for meat, What I've learned Flemmies are too heavy in bone for effective meat production. I, personally raise Broken New Zealands for pet, show and meat. You can PM with any questions if you'd like!

Several decades ago when I was a youngster, my Dad had several White NZ's that he was raising for meat. They became pets however and no rabbit was ever harmed. Eggs were on the menu even though the chickens were mostly pets as well as the pigeons.
