Sophie's Humble Servant

Hi,

Sophie usually gobbles up all her pellets every day. I give her a rounded 1/8 cup per day.

The last week she hasn't been as keen on eating them and there has been about 1/2 teaspoon left over when I check in the morning.

She is still eating lots if hay and all of her greens. Her poops and pees are normal and consistent.

Her behaviour is energetic and everything seems normal.

I haven't changed her pellets and they're not old or stale.

Any thoughts?

Is it the same bag of pellets? Sometimes they can change a bit from bag to bag. If you feed Oxbow, the batch that expires Oct 2015 seemed a bit different and some bunnies didn't like it.

Since she is eating well otherwise, I would not worry too much. If you have her at the vet, it can be something to mention, but probably not needing a vet visit on it's own. She could just be filling up on other things and doens't really like pellets as much as the other stuff.

It's from the same bag. We are about half way through the bag. I always keep the pellets in an airtight container so they stay fresh. I'm not sure on the batch number because I always discard it once I put the pellets in the container.

She has a nail trim this Friday but it's not with the vet. Maybe I'll see if the vet can see her too.

I just thought it was sort of weird considering how much she usually loves her pellets.

You can try a new bag, but that may not make a difference since it sounds like she was eating this bag fine til now. It might be a good idea to have her teeth checked, just to rule that out as the problem.

Would pellets bother her more to eat vs hay and veggies? Because she's eating those fine.

I was able to get her in to see a vet at the same time as her nail trim:)

It may be nothing but temporary pickiness, but in cases where it is the teeth, rabbits can be selective about what they eat by how it feels when they eat certain things. So it would depend on the type of tooth problem and what food hurts them to chew. By Friday if she isn't eating her pellets normally again, then tooth problems are certainly a possibility.

It's hard to know with these guys. One of my buns was a little off his food one day and went off hay for a few days, but would eat pellets and veggies. Just wouldn't touch the hay. I was starting to suspect teeth, when I tried him on a little alfalfa hay to see if he would eat that, and he did. So I knew it wasn't the teeth. After about 3 days he started eating his hay again. All I can think is that there may have been a weed in the hay that he ate, that upset his stomach, and so was reluctant to eat his hay again.

I'll make sure the vet looks at her back molars. I know that her front teeth look good because I always see them when she yawns.
Thanks for the responses:)

Well maybe Sophie knew I was worried because last night she ate ALL her pellets. Lol I'm glad but of coarse she starts acting normal again after I post my concerns on the forum.

I will keep the vet appt anyway, it can't hurt :)

Sophie had her vet check and nail trim today. Her teeth look great and she's got a clean bill of health.

One question though: Sophie was extra stressed out today when I took her in...the taxi was late and she got so worked up that her nose was running. This has never happened before. The vet said it was from stress and it's since stopped. Is this a common thing to happen?

Well she's back to not eating all her pellets again:/
This morning there was a tablespoon of uneaten pellets. The vet said her teeth were fine and she's still eating all her hay and veggies....but I can't help but be worried.
