Not eating after spay!!

Hey everyone, so my first post on here, so here it goes. My little girl, Lulu, got spayed today, she has not eaten since 5 pm last night. I did not feed her this morning, it totally blanked my mind. All she's had today is some Timothy hay, and that was early this morning. She would not eat ANYTHING, not even her favorite treats. Tried to force-feed her, she wouldn't take any. I'd be surprised if she ate a teaspoon. I'm worried right now, she's my first bun. Please tell me if this is ok or if I should be calling the vet!! Thanks!

Definitely call the vet if she has not eaten for more than 12 hours. That's really weird that she won't eat her favorite treats. You want her eating so she doesn't go into stasis.

She had about 2 syringe full!! Very happy, will update tomorrow

Have you got oxbow critical care or some pellets you can crush and syringe feed with water?
Vet visit asap. Stasis and not eating can be fatal.

Get some critical care on hand (comes in powdered form) just in case for future. Great stuff. Have saved a few buns and g.pigs from the dreaded stasis thru intervening before and in midst....force feeding 4 hourly.

But yes, vet asap. Don't wait.

Were you given painkiller to give her twice a day for 5 days? If not, that is barbaric, a spay is a serious operation. Rabbit vets always give painkillers to give at home. Hope she feels better soon.

She's eating some carrot right now, and done about 19 poops, normal looking. She also ate a few pellets. I'm thinking she was still just too sleepy, she was the last one done yesterday. I think my sweet girl is going to be fine.

Never got any meds. Vet tech just said that she had a pain killer right after she woke up and she should be good. This is a very known rabbit vet too.

Wow. No rabbit vet in the UK would send a bunny home without painkillers. No pain relief is the number one reason for post-spay complications.

She's eaten a lot this morning for only the first morning after her spay. She's had a carrot top, a lot of celery, and some hay. Still won't drink, I think I'll use a syringe give her some water. She's laying down right now, looks pretty comfy.
When I pet her she grinds her teeth, which is her way of saying she's happy. She doesn't grind her otherwise. I think we're good. Thanks guys!

Try and get to a vet that will give you painkillers for her, she’s probably in a LOT of pain!!! Keep giving treats and force feed if needed!!

Wow. No rabbit vet in the UK would send a bunny home without painkillers. No pain relief is the number one reason for post-spay complications.

Hm, I'm not so sure about that. If everything is ok there shouldn't be much pain left when the stuff they got at the vet wears off. That's what my vet said, and there really wasn't any issue with pain. I had to pluck my girl from the windowsill two days post spay, or so, would have prefered if she would have felt a little more sore and did not play spiderbunny.

Not eating after spay is normal, guess that's the aftermath of sedation. Didn't know it back then and made me nervous too. I think 12h is a reasonable limit when intervening should be considered, but force feeding isn't a pece of cake either, at least with my rabbits.

Well, I am sure. It is serious abdominal surgery and bunny will be in pain. Some will be OK sooner than others but good practice is to send them home with 5 days worth of painkiller.

Oh my God! That is horrible. You must insist on Metacam (Meloxicam).
1.5 ml for the first day, 0.7 ml for 5 days after that. She is in too much pain to eat. Pain causes stasis and shock and is often fatal. Sorry to say this, but your vet is a moron.

No I’m sorry this is really bad info to be spreading- a spay is much more intense than a neuter and my poor male bun was clearly in pain for a day after his op. So I was very glad to have been given painkillers to give him for the following few days. Rabbits should be eating CONSTANTLY! Twelve hours not eating= Big warning signs!! My vet wouldn’t let me come collect my bunny until they were completely happy that the painkillers were set in, had given me extra and critical care just incase and that they had seen him nibble on some hay.
I understand your point but I don’t want someone to read your comment and think it’s normal to not give pain meds after a serious op or to leave a bunny not eating anything at all for twelve hours!

well, she is probably in pain but she should be eating more than she is. How old is she? if they are too young the might have more complications than if they were older.
