I have Jabberwocky upstairs for now since he was neutered last Tuesday and when I gave him a baby carrot today, it almost seemed like he wasn't able to bite the carrot. It was really weird, he pushed it around with his mouth and tried but couldn't seem to get a grip on it to actually bite down, something he's never had trouble with before. I broke it up into smaller pieces and when he could just pick it up, he wasn't having a problem.

We brought him in to the vets office and she wasn't able to feel anything wrong with his jaws nor were there any signs of tooth problems. She seemed at a loss for what it could be. She said it looked like he chipped his front tooth a little bit but that should not be causing the problem.

I'm rather concerned because the last time something similar to this happened, it was after we had brought our guinea pig into the vet to have her back teeth trimmed (This was not the same vet we use now). The vet actually opened her mouth too wide or too forcefully and broke her jaw, but they didn't tell us, just told us she was "a little sore and would probably not be able to eat much for a while". We took her home and after a few days, gave her a baby carrot and it was very similar to what we saw Jabberwocky doing today, pushing it around and trying to bite it but unable to really get a grip on it.

It's just reminding me of an unpleasant situation, which I think is why I'm so concerned. Anyone have any idea why he could be doing this? I haven't given him anymore solid veggies tonight but I will in the morning so I'll report then if there is a change.

Do you know if he was tubed when they neutered him? Most vets dont tube them for spays/neuters, but it could explain soreness in the jaw if they did as they had to open it wide enough to get the tube down there.

Did they touch his teeth?

Try another carrot will he do the same thing again? Maybe he was just being silly?

I don't think it has anything to do with the neuter itself, it's been a week since his neuter and he hasn't started having the problem since yesterday. I do not know if they tube, there, but I don't think so...

No, nothing was done with his teeth while he was there, except when she looked at them before to make sure they were okay and when we brought him in yesterday.

Going to go down and do morning veggies soon so I'll let you know!

If he chipped a tooth, it might have hurt the underlying gum tissue. Let's hope whatever it is heals by itself. If no other food bothers him, I''d lay off the carrots for awhile. Give him some other treat instead. After maybe 2 weeks, try again.

Jabber hasn't shown any signs of having a problem since I took him off Metacam. It was suggested that it's possibly a reaction to the Metacam, perhaps numbing his mouth? Either way, I'm glad that he's back to normal.

Aw, I'm glad he's feeling better now! What an odd problem. Do you think maybe his jaw hurt before (if they did tube during the neuter) but the Metacam made him comfortable enough to bite things, but then when you stopped the Metacam the pain returned? And now it's better, or at least better enough for him to bite again?

I'm guessing it's either as you think or perhaps the Metacam was maybe numbing his mouth and he bit something in a way he should not have? Maybe that made it sore and he only noticed after the Metacam?

Either way, I am glad he's fine now and it wasn't teeth problems or an abscess brewing (That was my number one fear).
