I didn't realise so many veggies were part of the nightshade family. Those 'safe' veggies that are part of this family include tomatos, red/yellow/green peppers, amongst probably others.
I heard that potatoes are a no no for rabbits because they are part of the nightshade family, but so are tomatoes?? We can apparently feed the flesh of the tomato, but not the greens because these are the toxic bits. Is this, in fact, the case with peppers too? I luckily have never given mine the green stalk of the pepper just purely because I "wasn't sure" but is this safe to give? Or does it come under the category of 'toxic greens' as it does with tomatoes?

If that is the case, then does that mean rabbits can have the potato flesh? But not the greens? Or is the actual potato still "part" of the plant, because it is not the fruit? It's just the tuber under the ground, rather it blossoms a flower and then a fruit that looks remarkably like a green tomato!!

Thanks for clearing this up :)

I posted this in the other thread:

I believe the flesh of the potato is safe for rabbits to eat (in moderation, given the amount of starch in potatoes), not that Gus will touch them!:p

The peels (especially green peels!) and leaves and stems, of course, are quite toxic.

At least that's what my research revealed. I remember finding some good articles about potatoes in the horse community. I'm pretty sure what's toxic to horses is toxic to bunnies too. ;)

Hope that helps!

Ahhhhh okay!!! Thanks for clearing that up. Yes it is a great way to see if something is bad for bunnies by comparing to horses- it's very strange thought because you wouldn't think it would you? :D

Not sure I will try my chances with it though. I can't imagine the look of disgust if I presented them with some potato hahaa

Tell me about it! It's like when someone says to you that these little fellas (hyraxes), along with 2 other more elephant-looking animals, are the closest living relative to an ELEPHANT.

I was like....no way.......
