I just got my Link on Friday. He's 3 months old, not neutered yet, and my first bunny ever...so this has been a huge learning experience for me. Luckily I got two things going for me: 1)He's really quite laid back and tends to grade on a curve ;) and 2) I naturally research everything to death before I make a commitment, so I have a lot of "book" knowledge on rabbits. Unfortunately, this doesn't always translate into practical knowledge or first hand experience, you know what I mean?

So I have a couple of questions/concerns. First, Link doesn't appear to be eating or drinking very much. I'm not quite sure how much a rabbit is supposed to eat, but Link has only eaten about a half of his ball of hay (he has one of those hanging hay ball feeders) and maybe a couple of pellets since I brought him home.

Also, I refill the water in his water bowl twice a day just to keep it fresh, but he's probably only consumed about half of his water bowl over that time (it's a 16 oz bowl), so maybe 8 oz total in the last 24-30 hours. Is this normally about how much a rabbit would eat/drink? Is he just adjusting to his new environment? Should I take him to the vet?

He tends to spend a lot of time in his litter box, and he is definitely pooping and peeing, so I would guess that he must be consuming enough food/water to complete those things.

Also, he doesn't really sleep or move a whole lot. He just tends to sit in his litter box most of the time. I let him out of his cage for free time for about 15-20 minutes at a time, twice a day. When he's out, he hops around and explores and sniffs everything. He doesn't mind being petted, and he's even quite tolerant of me picking him up. He doesn't *like* it, but he tolerates it with minimal squirming.

He hasn't growled or nipped at me at all. He has thumped at me a couple of times when I'm cleaning up or re-arranging his cage, but I just stop what I'm doing and talk to him in a calm voice. That seems to make him feel better, lol.

I've also moved his litter box three times already. He is very particular about where the things in his cage belong, which I think is adorable. I tried to move a couple of other things and he puts them back. It's his house, so he can do as he pleases with them ;)

I basically just want confirmation that I'm doing things right and that my bunny is okay. If you could just let me know what you think about his eating/drinking I would feel much better!

Calm down. It is natural for rabbits to not eat or drink anything for the first couple of days. 8oz of water in a day for a 3 month old rabbit is perfectly fine. If he is not eating as much pelits as you would like then you can add about 1 tsp of uncooked old fashoned oat meal to the food. I have never had a rabbit refuse that. As for the hay sometimes they will eat more than other times. He is probably a fairly small rabbit at this point. His stonach can only hold so much. To me it sounds like you are doing everythig GREAT. If you can though I would let him run around for longer pereods of time at a time. I let my rabbits out to run for the first time today (only had 1 for 2 weeks and the other I got on Friday) (I am a former rabbit breeder). Mine took a little wile to learn that they could run. And when they found out the did not stop for over an hour. So what I am saying about the run time is , let him run around for a while longer.

Congrats on your new bunny! Saw his pics on the other thread and he is adorable :)

You are doing everything right, no worries. And good for you for doing your research.

As long as he has nicely formed poops and is peeing then he is eating and drinking enough. As Lauren said, it takes a while from when you bring them home to start eating as normal.

Also, some young buns take a little figuring out with eating. :) Agnes didn't eat her hay like she was supposed to at one time. She was just a young inexperienced bun. So while he is young, make hay easily accessible. Is getting to the hay in the ball a bit tedious for him? Also, put hay in the litterbox too.

Since he is new, him just sitting in his litterbox is normal too. As the days pass, you will see more and more of his personality emerge.

Good luck!

When I first brought Papaya home, he did the exact same things you are describing. As long as hes pooping and peeing you are doing well! Give him a couple days to adjust to his new home and he will come around :)

Good luck!

I want through some of the same issues with Honey, ie had book knowledge but she wasn't always typical. I wish she'd drink 8 oz a day. But she's an adult, so gets some of her moisture through her greens.

Thanks guys! I think I just needed a sounding board to make sure things were normal. Today we're actually having a *really* good day.

I took ldoerr's advice and Link and I have been out in his room most of the day. He LOVES being out. He tosses his t.p. rolls around until he gets them exactly where he wants them. It's sooooo cute!

He must be getting comfortable with me, because I can pet him now and he just lays there and closes his eyes and practically melts into the ground he's so relaxed. Link likes the side of his head (temple/jaw) area pet more than his forehead, which is good to know. He even lays down on his side with his front and back legs just kicked out and sleeps. He's sooooo cute!

I never knew I'd love my bunny this much! :)
