I am going to attend my first show in Nov. I know they have to be tattooed in the left ear..

My questions are..Do I need to fill out an informational card on my rabbits prior to the show? And I bring them in my own carriers correct?

And am I correct the best way to know if my rabbit meets the standards of showing IS to bring to a show and see what the judges have to say?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

The info card depends on the show. There will probably be and entry tag that has your name, the breed, class and some other info for the judge. Some shows have them ready for you to pick up at the beginning of the show. You should get more info when you enter the show.

You bring the rabbits in your own carrier. Some shows provide cages, other don't. The show package should tell you what it is. Bring your own food and water containers. I would bring water as well. Some shows do have water, but it will probably be different form their normal water.
I would make a sign that says not to touch/poke the rabbits. Some people put that the rabbit may bite (even if it won't) to discourage people from harassing the rabbits.

Many breeders will know if a rabbit is show able before they go to a show with it. As it is your first show, I would assume that you are new to showing and breeding. Asking the judges opinion on your rabbit is a good idea. The judge may be busy while s/he is judging, so you might not get a chance to talk to them at that time. Giving the judge a comment card or talking to them after the judging is done will give you more time to talk with the judge. Asking other breeders of the breed(s) you are taking is also a good idea for a second opinion.

Class...what do I say for that?
Yes I am new. I do have some pedigreed rabbits, have not been shown..and I have been doing research on the standards, but its always easier to have someone SHOW you the standards so you can SEE what you are looking for...for sure. I am that way. I learn hands on.

So I was thinking of entering my rabbits..and the judge can judge them and I will learn from that. What do you think? Then I will always see if I can pick an experienced breeders brains of the breeds I want to breed. I want to breed for the quality, not just to breed. So all the help I could get is greatly appreciated.
THanks for your reply!

Many shows have remark cards that you fill out. These are used to record the judge's comments on. Here's a picture and instructions http://www.threelittleladiesrabbitry.com/remarkcard.php

Some shows don't use remark cards - I just tell my son to jot his placings down on his carrier tags.

You also need to fill out a sheet that lists your name, mailing address, and rabbit sex, class and variety. Most shows have a exhibitor number list on the table that you'll need to sign to get a number. A few shows have you fill out a return envelope.

Be sure to find out if your show is pre-entry. This saves all the time consuming paperwork when checking in.

When judging a large number of rabbits, the judge may not go into as much detail or give you exactly the info that you need to evaluate a good show rabbit. Most judges can be approached after the judging for additional information to help you get started.

Yes, you will need to bring your own carriers.

I know which show you're going to (only cause I'm going to the same one. :p) and there are no information cards that you have to fill out regarding your rabbits. ;) You can have cards with their info for their carrying cages, if that's what you mean, yes; but you fill these out yourself and put them in the card holder on top of the cage. ;)

For class, that is the age of your rabbit. If it's over 6-months, then it's a senior (SR) and if it's under 6 months then it's a junior (JR). This is only for the 4-class breeds though (like your Mini Rex, Lionheads, and Mini Lops)... For English Lops, they are a 6-class breed, so your JR's will be under 6 months; Intermediates will be 6 to 8 months; and seniors will be over 8 months. Does that make sense? In the column that says "class" you will put either a JR, Int., or SR for the age of your rabbit. ;)

What colours of rabbits do you have? These are their "varieties". I breed REW Mini Rex, so when I fill out a entry form for...say my JR doe, then I put REW under the variety column. ;) If you have a broken black, then you would put broken black in the variety column. ;)

For Breed, you of course put their breed. ;)

And for Sex, you will put either buck or doe. An important thing to remember is not to mix up your ear numbers, sexes, etc. because it could lead to a rabbit being DQ'd if you place it in the wrong class, etc.

At the show, there will be a place where you must check-in. Basically you just pick up your exhibitor check-in sheet and then you need to look it over in case anything is wrong, so you can fix it before the show starts. They always have different binders with the check-in sheets (they are very organized :p), one for youth, and two for open - one for the A class and the other for the B class. I read your intro on here so know that you will be in the open class. ;) Youth class is only for those under 18.

As for remark cards...I know that the last time they had this show, I don't think they had remark cards for the open classes. If you want though, you could just stand there while the judge is going over the rabbits/placing them and mark down what they say and how they place your rabbit. ;) Also, don't let the judge know which rabbits are yours while they're being judged. ;) I forget why...but that's how it is, lol. Some judges are sneaky though and they know who owns the rabbit, etc. Plus they watch you carry it up to the table and when you take it off the table. One of my favorite judges knows one of my rabbits' names...and I didn't even tell him what it is...The ear number in the buck's ear is MISSISSI and is short for Mississippi. I told you, they're good! Lol.

I'll be at the same show so if you just need any help you can come and find me, ;) I'll have a whiteboard sitting out in front of my grooming table with my rabbitry name: Blue Sky Acres Rabbitry on it, as well as what I have for sale (if any.) lol.

I hope this helps, and good luck! :)

Emily. I think I am coming to see one of your REW for sale on friday? Are you the same gal? If you are..I would LOVE more to pick your brain about the show and would LOVE it when I go to have someone to "shadow" or help me so I know what I am doing.
I understand the breed/variety..and thanks for the info on the class. How do you mean on the English Lops tho...can I not enter one on this show?
And would I enter both show A and Show B on the form I have to fill out to enter my rabbits? And I just need carriers to bring them in right or do I need a cage too?

I dont have a grooming table..one doesnt have to have one right? I am so very new at this but I am very excited to do shows.
I wonder why you are not suppose to let the judge know which rabbit is yours....I want to bring a few of mine to see how they are for showing. I am trying to determine standards for my breeds from reading online but its way easier when someone shows you.

Anyhow thanks for all your info! Also, i read somewhere that I should have a print out of the breed standards for my breeds for the judges incase?
I know Lionheads cant win legs, but can they win anything? My buck is so pretty..and I think fits lionhead standard according to this website I was on, but only way to know is to have him judged I suppose.

Sure I would love to help you out! :) As of right now we won't be taking many to the show, but we'll take what we have and definitely be looking around for more. :)

And would I enter both show A and Show B on the form I have to fill out to enter my rabbits? You can enter both shows if you like...I think it costs double if you do though. ;) And I just need carriers to bring them in right or do I need a cage too? Just need carriers, that's it. ;)

I dont have a grooming table..one doesnt have to have one right? Nope. I didn't have one until sometime last year. lol.I am so very new at this but I am very excited to do shows.

Yes, you can talk to the judge after they are done judging a class, but if you're rabbit is up on the table (being judged with others of it's breed) then that's when you're not supposed to. ;) For example, I took my EL buck to my county fair last year and put him in the pet class due to a DQ. After the class was over I then approached the judge and asked him a question about the said DQ. ;)

For Lionheads, yes you should bring your own copy of their standard. ;) For other recognized breeds (like the Mini Rex and Mini Lops and English Lops) you won't have to because they already are in the standards. ;)
My answers are in bold! :)
