I apologize in advance that my first post is looking for help but to be honest, I'm in a little over my head and you all seem to have positive attitudes.

My girlfriend got me a rabbit as a gift (with my permission and I am fully willing to take care of it long term) but I assumed she knew much more about rabbits than she does. We're both poor college students who work full time as well but we're always playing with them when we're off.

The first rabbit is named Snape, he's a dwarf. He was got from a shelter at about 3 months old iirc. At first he was very apprehensive and even aggressive but now he's opened up to my girlfriend and I. He recently began being more aggressive when it seemed he was ready to be neutered but relaxed some after we brought our second bun home.

Last weekend (Sunday night) he torn his nail off of his hind left paw. It was bleeding pretty bad, but we cleaned it with a very diluted iodine and once it stopped bleeding we put him back in his hutch, I gave him some treats to chew on if it would help with the pain. I've been checking it daily for signs of infection but it seems to be ok and he doesn't limp or drag it at all. Is there anything else I should be doing for him?

The second rabbit is the one she bought me, named Cloud. He's an albino dwarf and has a slight problem with chewing carpet so to try and combat that I've been watching him closely when he is running around and I tell him no in a somewhat firm voice and give him an apple branch stick from the pet store to try and get him to chew that as well.

The two of them together seemed to bond great until recently when Cloud reached puberty(if you can call it that) and now anytime Snape comes near Cloud's hutch he thumps repeatedly. Previously the both used to lie in his cage together on occasion.

Mostly for the puberty question is I know they both should be neutered but given our very limited budget a) would it be possible to neuter Snape first as he is about 3 months older or should we put them both off until we can do them both in a couple of weeks. We've called most of the local vets in your library list and the cheapest so far is ~200/bunny. If anyone in Florida has any suggestions for Brevard county, Orlando and hillsborough county it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Nate.

For the nail, not much you can really do other than keep an eye on it. It should grow back. If he appears to be in pain, then you may need to go to the vet to get some pain medication. Try to keep the cage clean to help prevent infection as well.

I would get Snape neutered now if you can. That will give him time to heal and become fully sterile (around 4-6 weeks after being neutered). It can be hard to deal with 2 spays/neuteres at once if you are not sure what to so, so getting them done a few months apart can make it easier one you.
I would keep them apart until both are fixed. Rabbits can breed fairly young, and it's not really something you want to do unless you know what you are doing. You may be able to let them out together after he gets neutered, but it can still be tricky as Cloud will still be hormonal and that can lead to some issues.
Most vets will neuter males once the testicles descend and females at around 5-6 months old. Each vet is a bit different, so ask about the minimum age the are comfortable doing.
Once both are fixed, you can work on bonding them if that is what you want to do.
