wow it was loads of work...... first off i talkedit over with my family to be sure we were all ok with it. asits not just me doing all of the work. my husband builds hutches for me, helps with socializing the bunnies and feeding. then icalled and talked with the illinois ag dept. to see what ineeded to do to start rescue. the lady was extremely helpfulthere and said since i was keeping my rescue so small no worries aboutdoing all of the paper work. she said mainly all that was foris so that i can claim at the end of the year and get grants to helpout. next i talked with our city hall to make sure therewouldnt be any issues with keeping rabbits on our property they said not at all and wished me the best of luck! one cityhall member is actually helping us out with locating rabbit suppliesand unwanted hutches! then i did a website, the first was onyahoo groups as i dont know a thing about building a websitelol it was awful so i asked a girl i know locally who runs asmall animal rescue where to go to find a decent site. sofound that and it took me about 4 hours to get that up andgoing. now i have it set so that i pay 4.75 a month and getalot more space unlimited pictures ect. so its alot nicernow. then i started advertising in any pet groups, freecyclegroups, and similar pet related sites that i was starting up a smallrabbit rescue. i let people know locally also what i wasdoing. so alot of word of mouth has gotten meknown. the netherland dwarf i currently have in rescue camefrom an hour north of me. the gentleman runs a rabbitry andshe was brought to him, unable to stay there he had heard of me througha person who bought a rabbit from him and called me. iwent the following day to pick her up! he now keeps my infoclose to the phone as if he has any other rabbits brought tohim. i emailed tons of places asking to post my link site ontheir site, as in google search engine, the rabbit society, alot of rabbit related people! breeders, other shelters andrescues! its been many many hours on the phone and on thecomputer to get it known that im here and want to help but so wellworth it! the first week i had 5 rabbits in and all of themwere adopted!! i also am getting posted onpetfinder. was supposed to happen already but i called ourvet today and he lost the number to fax in a letter of recommendationoppps lol i gave it to him again and they are to fax that intoday so hopefully by next week ill be posted on there as arescue. i have called local paper ads, emailed people on petfinder and a local web that is used for freepets, to let them know i am here if they cant find a goodhome for their rabbit. i have a lady coming sat. from thechicago area 2 hours north of me to release her rabbit and guinea pigas they are moving and wanted to be sure they were placed somewherethat they would be very well taken care of. i noticed also, ihad a reply in my guestbook from a lady in the phillipines!!wow so awesome!brimmhere...I would love to talk to you about how you gotthis all started...I'm still waiting for a call back from a localshelter about fostering...but haven't heard back. Today I gotcontacted about taking another bun...I have 3 and not sure I have roomfor a 4th fulltime!
How did you get this started, how did you get word out?
i take up to 7 rabbits inat a time. that way i can give each one the attention theyneedHow small is "small"? I'm thinking of starting offwith no more than 5 in at a time as I don't want to get toooverwhelmed. I'm still not sure if I'm gonna go this route,or foster for an existing shelter..that way its much easier to get theword out. Thanks for the info tho...If I have more questionsI may ask if thats ok! Thanks again!
