Hi all. Long time no post.
Ok Im back in the bunny business. I have taken in a bun that I rescuedfrom our local petsupplies plus who was in a bad situation. Normally Idont buy from places like that cause oyu never know where their rabbitscome from, and it only feeds the need for the pet bunny demand. Anyhowthey had a fully grown, intact, mini rex(possibly standard rex cross)in with other fully intact males. Some of wich were her litter. When Ifirst saw the rabbit, I examined her. I thought she was pregnant(turnsout shes not). She was on the thin side, and very jumpy from being manhandled at the store. I did not buy her on that day. Didnt have enoughmoney, and they wanted $30 for her. I told the assistant manager thatthey needed to separate her from those bucks. She said she would. Well,I called back two days later to see if they still had the rabbit. Shehad not separated her. I explained why she needed to have herown cage. i was then told to call another manager the next day. Wich Idid. She was the store manager. She told me this "Yes we know the doeis possibly pregnant. She came to us that way. We know the bucks willkill the babies. theres not much we can do about it. If she is pregantwe'll just tell whoever buys her that shes pregnant." Ugh. Come to findout a local 4-her wasbreeding them for a 4-h projecdt, anddecided to get rid of her rabbits through the store.Anyhow, Iwas in there a few days later. I ended up coming home with the bunny. Ihad her in isolation out in one of my remianing outdoor hutches. Thisone has a big box on the end of it for the animal to get out of theweather. 2 days later the rabbit gets sick. My vet diagnosed her withpasteurella(sp?) and coccidi. He said it came from the breeder thestore got their bunnies from. Since then its been a rocky two weekswith her. She has good days and bad days. Really fun force feeding her.Now theres another problem. She somehow got severe frostebite in bothears. I dont know if she got it under my care, or if she had it beforeshe was dropped off at the petstore. Im sure her illness didnt help itany. Either way she's gonna lose part of her ears. She doesnt seemto be in any pain from it, and theres no swelling. Ive really neverdealt with frostebite in a bunny, and I have housed many rabbits inthat cage before with no problems at all. Finacailly I cant havesurgery done on her ears, and shes not in the shape to be put through amajor surgery. Right now shes living in my house, and willhopefullyfully recover. She chases my cats around, and hasclaimed their sleeping spot on my bed as her own.
Also since I am back into breeding, Ill have standard chin babies ready in march.
