New bunny owner and new forum member, here.....

The only previous experience I have with rabbits was a short attempt to breed them when we raised Burmese pythons. I had to buy them from the feed store to feed the pythons so I thought raising them would be easier and cheaper. Now, 20 yrs later when I see the bond and the intelligence that is possible with rabbits I'm horrified that I could have so easily done such a thing..

Anyway, I dunno if this is overshare or not, but I will tell you a story of how we (my family) became new "bunny people." We adopted 3 kids. Our middle child had been in the system since he was 7 months old. He was taken and given 3 weeks to live because he was so emaciated, had not been fed, etc. At 2.5 yrs old, was then given back to the bio parents until he was 3.5. He was found walking down the highway in his diaper, which was the catalyst for his 2nd and final removal.

In the psych eval, it was noted that his father or uncle (unsure which it was) did horribly sadistic things to him. One of the things he did to him, was to take his pet rabbit and slash its throat in front of him. This was done sometime between 2002 to 2004. We never spoke to him about it, and he never mentioned it.

This year, he turned 11 and 4 nights ago, we were all sitting around the computer playing on the internet, etc. We saw a website about rabbits and his sister wanted to go see it. We clicked and there were pics, stories, etc. Out of nowhere my son's face turns red, he screws up his eyes and begins to sob like a 2 yo that misses his mommy (this is very significant, because he rarely cries like that, nor shows his emotion, etc). Well, the whole story about his pet rabbit comes pouring out....I hold and comfort him, and we talked through it.

The very next day, we took some guinea pigs (we raise the Baldwins and skinny pigs) to a place out of the area. As we walked up to the entrance, what do we see but a cage of rabbits.....They are, what I believe to be, Altex. The big ones, with white bodies, himalayan markings of nose, ears, feet, etc. I've been doing a lot of reading and I THINK I'm using correct terms...LOL.

My son asks the man there about the rabbits. The man begins to tell him that they were there, for the people that butcher them for food (we live by the Mexican border and there are a lot of different cultural practices in regards to what is eaten, such as goats, rabbits and so on).

Drake looks horrified and as if he is about to burst into tears again, but he fights down the urge and works up his courage to ask the man if he can have them. I tried to break in and explain to my son, that the man already said they were spoken for, but I guess the man saw something in my son's eyes because he asks him how much he has. Drake dug down into his pocket and pulls out $7.76. The man looked at me and I smiled. He looked down at Drake and told him "that'll cover it." With beaming eyes, Drake reached into the cage with even more excitement than he did in his pocket and promptly got nipped. He decided that was the one he wanted. I asked him why he wanted the one that bit him and he replied "so I can work with her and let her know she is loved." He then made the command decision that since the 2 bunnies were living together, we couldn't take one from the other.

As you can imagine, we came home with 2 Altex does........

Of course, my other 2 kids wanted rabbits (and with no shame whatsoever, I admitted to wanting one, as well :big wink:) so we decided to get 2 more (Flemish). Now, we have 4 (2 Altex, 2 Flemish). They are such lovely animals and I am so glad we got them. It gladdens my heart that my son will now have a positive experience with a pet rabbit, as well as my other kids.

So nice to meet all of you. I live in SE AZ and I'm excited to be on this forum to hear about everyone else's experiences, as well!

Welcome! That was a wonderful story. I have also had foster kids and know how important it is for them to make connections. He's a lucky little boy to have found you. I truly hope the buns can help your son take one more step toward happy healthy relationships.

Yes. It sounds like you have a wonderful home.

You & your children are welcome here. There is lots of good information in the library section. In fact it might be good for your son to take the lead in learning more about rabbits. It sounds like it would be good for him.

He has already started! LOL. He started talking about binkies....I was like, do what???

I attribute his desire to research, to the fact that he is homeschooled and that is basically what they do for school, all the time...That and his newly awakened love/interest in rabbits, again. :)

Thanks for the library section reminder as it's something we can do, together....

I would like to welcome you to Rabbits Online, my name is Dave and I am a moderator on the forum. So if I can be of any help please let me know. This is a terrific website for rabbits and their slaves, not only is it very active but also friendly. I am so glad you’re here and I know you will enjoy it.

I was impressed that your son wanted the one that bit him. Most children wouldn't havewanted arabbit after that. That was also something that he wanted to show the bunny that she is loved.

Many bunnies’ recommend their slaves to this site so we may learn of others methods to keeping our furry masters happy.

If you everhave a sick bunny, please post in The Infirmary and include your rabbit's age, breed and health history as well diet and output details leading up to the problem.

Here are somelinks I thought you might find interesting:

*For reference the Library section

*To brag or tell everyone about the antics of your bunny or just to talk about your day here is where to start a Bunny Blog, you can also look back at it later and remember when you had a life before your bunny.

*Now all the bunny’s like talk to each other when we mere slaves aren’t around in the Bunny Chat is the spot to be.

*The House Rabbit Society has a lot of good information on what veggies are safe for bunny’s, etc.

*Here is a link to learn what your furry master is trying to say to you How to Understand Your Bunny's Language

*Rabbits Online also has regional forums , this a good way to find a vet in your area that has experience with rabbits and to find out from other nearby of good sources of rabbit supplies.

The Let Your Hare Down section is for anything non-bunny related.

Here is a link tothat will help you and your bunny to connect, How to Bond with Your Bunny.

Now every forum has rules and ours can be found with this link Rabbits Online Forum Rules. This gives guidelines on what is acceptable, what is not and how we hope everyone will treat each other.

Everyone on this forum loves to see pictures of each other’s bunnies. So if you would like to post a picture this link will help you do that, Upload Photo's to Photo Gallery. Then in the post, you click on the "G" in the tool bar to insert your photo. Many people also use Photobucket. You just copy the img file and paste it into the post.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions and I am glad you have joined rabbits online; I look forward to seeing you around.

What a sweet story! Welcome to the forum and thank you for being such a great person for adopting your children and giving them the love that they deserve! There is a movie on netflix called the christmas bunny about a little girl in foster care who comes out of her shell because of a bunny. It is such a cute movie. And I have never heard of Altex but I love Flemish Giants. I have one of my own named Frank he is white.

What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing your story of your Son and how you all got into rabbits. With the way I see society, hearing stories like this gives me hope that there are people out there who truly care for others and not all about themselves.

Welcome to the forum. Look forward to hearing further stories about your family's new life with bunnies. Definitely need pics!

K :)

BTW: Good for you to homeschool. I did with my Son. Was the best experience for both of us!

Welcome :)
Your son sounds like a sweetest of sweet hearts
I hope you and your family enjoy the website!

Thanks, Z! I look forward to chatting with you guys!

Yes, I taught special ed in a resource room for K-3rd grade and the public school system is failing, imo. There's lots of other reasons, as well that I made the decision to homeschool.

I always wished I was home-schooled... Although I met
my boyfriend in High school but besides that I feel I never
learnt much or got pushed to my full extent..

You sound like you're doing an excellent job with
family and pets :)
