It was almost ten years ago that our last domestic bunny, a dwarf mini-Rex named Silver Moon passed away from a heart attack during a lightening storm when our swimming pool was hit.
Recently events unfolded that brought us back to the rabbit world. Three weeks ago, two wild baby rabbits were brought to us by the neighbor children after their dog found them. They were less than 24 hours old. After 19 days, against the odds they were thriving until the family cat broke into the office. While gentle with small animals, the cat wanted to see the baby bunnies and knocked the cage off of the shelf. Abbott and Costello died instantly.I couldn't look at a piece of stray hay without breaking into tears. My husband brought me to the animal shelter and said we should adopt a bunny in honor of my wild babies.
The wildlife center helping us with the bunnies was supportive and main bunny rehabber helped our family pick out a wonderful domestic bunny in Abbott and Costello's memory. Abbott and Costello will be remembered forever and our family will continue to rehab wild rabbits with the help of Clementine, our new family bunny.
We were told that Clementine is a Silver Marten/Lionhead mix (though I don't see the Lionhead very much). Although we adopted her yesterday, she will stay at the shelter for another week since she had not yet been spayed. When we pick her up she will be just about a year old so we will use that day as her birthday.
Clementine has a wonderful disposition. Even though she doesn't really know us yet, she was very comfortable in my lap and then she crawled off of my lap and into my 18 year old daughter's lap and started licking her. In addition to being a much loved part of our family, Clementine will help future orphaned baby wild bunnies by providing valuable cecotropes. I will never completely get over losing my wild babies, but with Clementine's help, hopefully I will save others and the lives of my little ones will not be in vain.
Thank you all so much for including me as a part of the Bunny Buddies community. I also joined Bunspace and made a profile page there for Clementine and a memorial page for Abbott and Costello.
