I just got a new doe a couple weeks ago from arden wetzel. She is 3-4 months old (waiting on her pedigree) I forgot to ask if she was double maned does she look like it? At what age will they molt? I wonder how much of her mane she'll keep. I love it right now. She is super mellow so I am hoping to breed her and get that temperment in many of the kits. The buck I have is still young and a little more skiddish but is really mellowing out more with extra handling. Personality is really important to me....no one wants a mean bunny :p

Oh my....I didn't know Arden was still working with lionheads....

She's adorable - I love her face.

She is doublemane. Her fur looks crimped - meaning that it has a bit of a curl to it - so she should keep her mane.

Wow, what a cutie! Definitely double maned, one around her head and one around the body. :) A single maned animal usually only has the head mane.

Definitely a DM. If she's already 3-4 months she already molted out much of what she will right now. My LH tend to molt out the center of the back fur by about two months. She might molt again in the spring and fall, but she should keep most of that hair. Just a funny note on molting: I have a Holland that molted out almost all of his hair this spring/summer. He looks absolutely dreadful...like something the cat dragged in. His hair is coming back in patches...I've never witnessed a bunny molt this completely. I feel bad even showing him to people. LOL

For personality it's really important you spend a great deal of time with the kits as they are growing up. Hold and handle them as much as you can. I've found that they will then become more affectionate. I've had real problems trying to get lionheads to become sociable if they come to me without being socialized. It's much easier to do that with them when they are still with mom.

Your doe may go through what I call the "teenage years" soon. Sometimes as their hormones start going they can get a meaner streak in them and be more standoffish. Several of my lionhead does went through this phase, but they got over it in a month or two. Just keep giving her plenty of love and attention.
