Hi all! In a few weeks I will be getting a male flemish giant. We are just waiting for it to be old enough to leave it's bunny mom.

I owned a small bunny ( I believe mini rex) many years ago so I have been reading up here and at other flemish giant specific sites. I would appreciate any info from those that own these big guys. I can barely contain my excitement but am keeping myself busy by learning beforehand and by preparing.

My husband will be building a large cage. I plan on litter training him and once that happens he will be able to spend most of the day loose in the house but we do plan to provide ample cage space for when he has to be in there.

I have all of the supplies necessary including a few toys. I am still researching pellets as I cannot find the brand the breeder uses in my area. She will provide a weeks worth of pellets so I will slowly switch him over to a different food.

Welcome to the forum. People tend to like Oxbow pellets both alfalfa for the youngsters & timothy for adults. They come in 5-lb bags, so in case he doesn't like them you won't have much waste.

There is information in the library section about rabbit-proofing the house, etc.

Just a thought. If you can't find Oxbow, ZuPreem and Kay-Tee make a good pellet.

Just remember alfalfa is good for babies til 6 months, then it would be good to start switching. But I would as a person who has a Flemish. I think I've read that Flemish Giants do mature slower because they are bigger buns. I don't know if this means their digestive system.

Good Luck with your Flemish. Love those big rabbits. Please post pic when you get him.

Yay for the Flemish! I fed my Flemish Katee for young rabbits until she was around 10 months old then I slowly swapped her over to Oxbow for adults.Oxbow does come in 5 pound bags but I have found one store that will carry a bigger bag which is helpful since they eat more. She is now 2 years old and she eats orchard grass (when she has no choice). She has always been challenging when it comes to getting her to eat her hay and pellets. She will hold out making me nervous since skipping meals is never good for them. She prefers fresh greens and herbs over anything I can offer. Just be careful introducing foods. I followed the advice from the library on feeding and it has been a tremendous help. I am almost as addicted to this forum as I am to my Flemish!I am going to agree with the longer to develop...I thought that she was finished growing but she just had her 2nd birthday and another growth spurt. When you already weigh 20 pounds what's a couple more?

Rabbit proofing the house was pretty easy!. She could only fit under the furniture for about 2-3 weeks then she was too big. She did get stuck a couple of times, she doesn't realize how big she is. We lost a couple of cords and she redesigned a couple corners of furniture but she grew out of this almost immediatley after she was spayed. She has her own bedroom which we thought was easier than a cage. Rabbit by Design is what I am calling her room. She has carpet like no other place in the house (probably a good thing). She also loves to read my book which are in her room. I have notice she prefers the horror books. She has made the covers very scary looking.

I hope you enjoy your Flemish as much as we enjoy ours!
