So we will be building Thumpers new cage. He has definately outgrown his current one. We plan on building a metal cage with a wood bottom although I am planning to cover the wood to make it easy to clean and to protect it from spills.

Do any of you have any tips or tricks that you learned from experience when building a cage or things you wished were different in the cage you have?

Also, it will be two levels. I am not sure wether to just have a "hole" for him to jump up and down through or a ramp. Thoughts?

I especially would like to hear from those with larger rabbits.

I made a cage with storage cubes and a wooden base. I put cheap stick on tiles on it, because that's what I had seen many people do online. But, when he went to go in his cage he was really scared of the floor because he kept slipping. So, I put carpet all over it and he is now much more happy. :)

Also, I'd highly suggest a ramp. When Buster first got in he was really scared and wouldn't go up... eventually he figured out the ramp and only took that for a while. Now he's comfortable enough to jump up, but for a while he was too scared.
I also recommend putting carpet or something really sticky down on the ramp (this may seem obvious but I wasn't so smart. Hah.) When I had first brought him in I had a place mat for the ramp... he got up to the 2nd floor and then started freaking out because he was afraid to go down (because it was slippery and like a slide.) Carpet made it much easier for him. :)

Hubby thought NIC grids looked trashy..he is very...an*l.

I made a wood pen thats 3x4 with a 3x2 second level they can get to via a ramp, but i can close 2nd level as needed. with thumper being a big bunny, you may want to look at cornering off a room or hall for him and using a large dog kennel as a cage to be penned up.

how much room do you have to work with? with a leveled hutch style you have to think each level will have to be 24-30" high or one 30" level at least so he can stand up. and he wouldnt need a ramp, you could make a hide box at one bottom level and he could use the top of that as a step to next level. but honestly...if you can make him a free roam bunny hell benefit much from it.

i use vinyl stick on squares, on sale for 25cents each at lowes right now. then use carpet squares for traction but they like lying on the cool vinyl. the walmarts by me started carrying 30"x18", i think, carpet peices with sewed edges for 1.80$ which for me..i was like super and got a few. i dont feel too bad when they stain them or rip them up

I am making a 6ft long by 28" wide by 30" tall cage for my bunnies.

My recommendation is to seal everything. I am lining the bottom with slip-resistant linoleum, but I caulked inside and out (around the kick guard) and sealed the wood before putting the flooring down. That way if anything were to slip between the cracks of the linoleum or something, I wouldn't be out a cage destroyed by rot/mold.
