Hi

I bought a new rabbit this pastweekend. She is the sweetest little bun. She wasactually a gift for my son's 5th bday. He named her FlopsyCuteness. I don't have a dig. cam. (I'm a film/slrpurist:?)...but, my sister has joined the dig. age, so I will have hercome take some pics of my buns to post.

Please, bear with me, this is sort of longwinded....unfortunately, I don't have the ability to 'make a long storyshort'...:)

Anyway, IboughtFlopsyCutenessfrom a petstore thatI had never been to before. It was pretty far from where Ilive, but after speaking to the owner a few times on the phone, I feltis was worth the ride. The minute I walked in, I knew Ishould turn and leave. However, after making the drive, Ifelt compelled to 'take a look around'. For the most part, their buns looked healthy, and alert. Until I came to FlopsyCuteness's cage. She was in with two other buns- they werevery chubby and both fighting over the water bottle. When Iwent to her cage, she came right over to me. Well, that wasit, I had to hold her (biggest mistake)...She was so skinny.I could feel her little bones. The girl said that a weelprior she wasn't eating, so they took her out and put her alone in acage. Once she started eating again, they put her back withthe other two. Uggh...The two other buns weren't letting hereat or drink. She cuddled right up to me as I held her, sohow could I resist. At that point, I knew I could not leaveher there to go back into that cage. .

Once I brought her home and got hersettled into her new cage, she started eating as though she hadn't evereaten before, and she drank nearly a whole water bottle rightdown. She ventured out of her cage and withing a half an hourwas trying to run all over (her legs seemed week, as though she'd neverhad excercise before).

Her poops went from dry and tan to much darker color.I've noticed that some times they are bunched together. Arethese the cecotropes? If so, I'm wondering if she is not'eating' them, or if she is producing too many? Is thatpossible? I mixed some of the food they were feeding her withour food, so it wasn't a drastic change. Should she be eatingthem, if not what should I do?

I believe, after looking at a lot of photos, that she is aPolish dwarf. She is very (very tiny)...sitting, she isprobably five in. tall (to top of rounded back), and about 6/7 inlong...I am concerned she was taken from the mother too soon. They told me that they got the buns when they were seven weeks and thatthey're probably 11 now....how big should that type of bunny be by 11wks?

She is eating and drinking and very active, very brighteyed. I've read the cheat sheet over- and about thepoops...but, couldn't really decipher what poops she is having(somehave beenround and hard)...

Any advice or thoughts, I'd gladly welcome.......

Thanks....

Ericka

I'm not an expert, but she sounds like she's doing great.:) The stools may be sticking because they're just a touchloose, which is logical given her sudden intake of somewhat differentfood. Or they could be clumps of cecotropes...somebody had a post about that a week or three ago, may want to do asearch.

Anyway, good on ya! Sounds likea rescue to me. :)

Hi

I just did a search and found a thread that actually had a picture ofcecotropes and that is definitely what she is producing. Thismorning, alone, that is all she has produced. Yesterday, itseemed like it was more 50/50....

Am I correct in thinking she is getting too much protein? Is that whatcauses excessive cecotropes? She has hay and has been eatingthat...

Could it be that she is too young or wasn't weaned properly? I'm not sure at what point I should become concerned...

To top it off, Mindy bit the poor babies nose through her cage...:(theywere sniffing eachother and Mindy grabbed her nose...it was bleeding alittle...I wiped it clean with a dampened towel...

Thanks.

Hi Ericka,

Sounds like things a going okay.

IMO....I would provide unlimited alfalfa hay, alfalfa-based pellets, and water. At least until the little one has acclimated to it's newenvironment.

Too much protien could be the problem. What kind of pellets are you giving her? Check the protien level.

Producing too many cecotropes is not a problem in itself. Runny stoolsare what you'll need to watch for. Cecotropes are a way to reprocessnutrients that were not absorbed the first time through a bunniessystem. If they are getting the proper nutrition, it may not benecessary for them to consume their cecotropes. Our bunnies have wirebottom cages and very often the cecotropes fall through to the drop panbelow.

You might consider giving some Nutri-Cal to help boost her system and promote a healthy appetite.

Ouchie on the nose!!! A bit of Neosporin will help heal that.

I am feeding the buns Purina Rabbit Chow...it is16% protein. I am currently using Timothy Hay...I have afeeling she has been so happy to have food that she is eating toomuch...I don't take away their food dishes, I just leave them in thecage with whatever food is in it...I think she has been eating only thepellets and not much hay...so, a couple of hours ago, I removed herfood dish so she would eat more hay...

Her feces aren't runny...they're definitely cecotropes...no round ones today....

So, if the consesus is to not worry just yet, than I will not...which may be easier said than done...:)

She is a feisty little bunny!

Thanks again...

Ericka

ps- I will put some neosporin on asap...thanks...
