I got Mim four weeks ago. She's my first rabbit and before deciding to buy her I did some reseaarch. But she was the last of her litter being sold and now I'm wondering if she'd be more affectionate if she had another bunny. I seriously love bunnies- they're so curious and entertaining and cute- but she hates being picked up and cuddled. Will this change as she gets older or gets a playmate? She seems very happy right now, but I want her to have the best life possible for her. Can someone please give me advice on this? She's a holland lop and I'm thinking of getting a male american fuzzy lop (because I read that males and females don't fight as often). Mim only let's me pet her when she's in her cage, but she'll run to me whether she's free or in her cage. She scratches me every time I pick her up and bit me today when I went to put her in her cage. The breeder I bought her from said she was cuddly, loved to be held, and was playful. I don't see it:(

Welcome To RO!

Congratulations on your new Holland Lop. They are very cuddly wants they settle down and you gain their trust. It takes a bit for a bunny to settle into their surroundings. And those cuddles don't come easy. You really need to work with them, spend time with them, talk to them and eventually those cuddles will come. And all your hard work, is all worth it, when you get cuddles from your bunny.

It's always nice to have more than one bunny. I have five right now and have bonded with them each individually. But lots here, like to bond their bunnies to each other. Hoping those who have successfully done it, will give you that insight. Also I did hear that male and female is an easier bond. Just make sure that each are neutered and spayed. It makes it easier to bond bunnies when there are no hormones involved. Causes dominance issues with the bunnies.

You have come to the right place. Lots of threads about getting to know your bunny. Lots of info in the Library Section for bonding.

Hope this Helps. Bunnies are definitely awesome companions and very affectionate. It just takes a different approach. Time and patience is the key.

Getting a new rabbit now wouldn't be a good idea. She needs to get through the hormonal stage & spayed first. Usually if they're bonded before that, the bonding gets lost, if not by the hormones, then by the spaying recuperation isolation.

I don't have a cage, just a carrier & an xpen [exercise pen], so don't have to put Honey back in her cage all the time. I go into the pen & visit her. Just pet her at first & stop if she seems uncomfortable. They are curious, so sometimes it helps to sit & ignore them & they may come & see what you're doing.
