Depends. Are you haveing trouble withbiteing, pooping/peeing outside the litterbox, territorial issues, doyou want him to have company (another rabbit) down the line?If any of that is a yes, then you might start considering. Ifnot, then you don't have to.

Congrats on the bun!!!

Are you certain it is a him? Depending on the age of your bun..its sometimes hard to tell.

Regardless of sex, you shouldnt spay/neuter your bun until they are about 6months of age.

If Female, spayingin my opinion is necessaryas itdrastically reduces their chances of reproductive cancer (and theobvious of no unwanted litters).

With a male it's really up to you. Some males become agressive oncethey get around that 6 month mark and may require a neuter to help withtheir behavior. Or if you decide to one day have another bun, it willbe much easier to have them get along if they are both fixed. But ifhe's a boy and isn't spraying/being aggressive it's not a big deal ifyou don't. Just keep the future in mind as neutering on an older maleis more risky.

Freddysmom, do you know if spaying an older female (2 yrs) is risky?

A vet told me about spaying reducing chances ofcancer, but what about the chance of something going wrong during thesugery?

From what I have read, two years old is at a higher risk and thebiggest issue is with the anesthesia. With younger buns they just putthem under and operate, with an older bun they do bloodworkto see if everything is okay and to see if theres a possibility theanesthesia will cause some sort of problem...usually not being able tometabolize it out properly. and its the same rule with ppl as bunnies..younger ppl usually do better in surgery than older..not to say thatanythingwill go wrong. you may just end up with a longerre-coop time.

If this is something you are seriously considering have a sitdownwith your vet. If your vet is not willing to do this thatshould be a huge red flag. Also while talking to the vetaskquestions like how many spays has he/she done and how manyhave been on older rabbits and how many has he/she lost. withmy vetwhen we spoke about neutering we sat down for a goodtwenty minutestalking about it and you could tellthey were good honest answers. You should feel comfy with your vet. Ifanything seems wrong look for another. This is the best I can offer toyou :)

thanks freddysmom.

i wouldn't have considered getting Rue spayed except that i can't bondher and Kweli, who is also female. Kweli is only 4 months old but Rueis the one who doesn't want to be friends. but they are doing fineliving separated, and i wouldn't want to risk losing The Rue.
