Hello All, this is Alora, I just have some questions about neutering. I got my netherland dwarf rabbit, Zentor, at 6 months old. The girl that I got him from did not neuter him, and she told me that I don't really have to unless his sraying becomes a problem. So far that hasn't been a problem at all, but he does tend to mark the places he feels comfortable by pooping. Now, I only rent the place I'm staying at, so I have to be careful with the carpets. Will getting him neutered take away his pooping outside of his cage? What are the other benifits to getting him fixed. He is our only pet so the who breeding things isn't an issue either. He is very mellow, but shy. He hasn't bit us at all and isn't agressive either. yep, any info will help me out, THANKS!

I would neuter any bunny that's in good health and isn't going to be used for breeding or show. It curbs a lot of bad behaviors, like spraying and humping (which he may start to do later), and makes them stink less (in my experience). He may stop pooping everywhere, but he may not. The issue is that he is still young enough to not have developed these bad behaviors yet, so he may start spraying and humping which could be a disaster. Testicular cancer is also nothing to sneeze at, although it's not nearly as common as uterine tumors. If he's healthy, this is the best time to do it--while he's able to heal and before any bad behaviors have shown up.

I agree with tonyshuman. The first rabbit I ever had contact with was an intact male. He was at least 5 years old, adorable, and miserable. He lusted after my forearms. Between his love "nips" and nails I looked like I'd crawled through a football field of razor wire. I gave him a stuffed animal to quell his amorous advances, but it didn't really work. After this experience I decided that neutering them is an act of kindness. He would have been much happier if he hadn't been the victim of his raging hormones.

Here here! I agree too!:D

Males in love are painful to the arms and stuffed animal distractions only last so long! Our boy was so fascinated by my hair he started to spray me!

He would do a ninja sneak attack and spray my hair everytime...nothing else...just me...my hair was mid-back length and he managed to spray me three times the morning of his neuter...and I didn't have time to shower again before we had to leave to drop him at the vet! Yeah...I stunk...blech...

Males always look so depressed and sad when they are hormonal...the neutering helps with behavior and it seems to relieve the depression and sadness too! IMO neutering is an absolute MUST!

I know that Im going to get him neutured, but I guess one of my biggest questions is that, will he stop pooping on the carpet when he does get fixed? He has two spots in my room that he really feels comfortable and so he decides that it's where he needs to poop when he's out of his cage. I would really like to know if this is just him marking his "teritory" thus when he gets fixed this behavior will go away. ya?

Once neutered the pooping will taper off...
Once the hormones subside he will be less driven to mark his territory...there would at least be a reduction in the amount of poops...

It won't be an immediate improvement...but it will definately help!

thank for the advice everyone. also im just a little allergic to my bun bun zentor, so im trying to keep things as clean as possible as well. so if i can get him to just poop in his cage i wont get the sneezes. haha, plus this is my first time owning a bunny so i don't know too much about what normal behavior is. anyways, i will call the vet on monday and make an appointment. :]

why dont you get an intolerance test done i`d did this was £30 you may find it`s one type of hay then you could poss use another? obv talk to one of the bunny experts on here first before changing his hay just i thought!.I have a male bun, we neutered at 5/6 months, he leaves 4/6 poops outside of his litter tray a day which i think is pretty good!!

My bf was very allergic to hay we bought from a farm, but not as much to the Oxbow hay we bought from the pet store. sbaxter has a good point that it could be just the type of hay. Adult bunnies just need a lot of a grass hay--not alfalfa/lucerne hay, it doesn't really matter which type.

UPDATE!

so I called a vet today and made an appointment to get little zentor fixed. he's getting it done on the 7th. is there anything specific I should ask the doctor? what kind of anasteshia (spelling?) should they give him?
