This is the SECOND time I've found one of my little babies out of the box, and even out of their bunny shed! This little escape artist just doesn't want to stay with momma! (Or the opposite, be left by momma!)

=/ I didn't get the baby saver wire on my cages. Now I'm paying for it. BAH! So I stuffed some hay in front of the wire he's been getting out from. I'm surprised he's survived that fall twice. It's a three foot fall to the floor (or 1 foot increments, if he fell on a storage container, storage container, then floor), plus a half foot fall onto sharp gravel. I'm also surprised that I was able to find him tonight. He was -almost- under the shed. D=

With today being day 10, hopefully they'll be getting their eyes open, and hopefully their heads will grow so they can't squeeze through the bars. =/

I had a baby do that at day 8, fell from top tier on top of a 2 stack cage fell then to the bottom cage in with a buck where it crawled into the corner and I found it chilled and it had some kind of internal injury and died later that day.

At the hard ware store I got 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch wire for like $10 for 10 ft and made 2 inch high baby saver on the outside of my brood doe cages it saved a whole litter when the doe had them on the wire in the corner.

I hate it when this happens. I used chicken mesh wire type thing around the outsides of my cages - missed a tiny spot under the door - and don't you know it - that's where one escaped?

ARG!

I have urine guards on my brood cages, and that helps, but there is about a 4 inch gap in the wire for a feeder, so when I have litters I got to put a hay rack over it... I have had escapes at older ages.. they squeezed through that gap and fell just 1 stacker down...Oi. Babies. :p

Don'tcha just love the feeling that a baby bunny is smarter than you?

(NOT REALLY)...

I've been asking my dad to put some extra wire on the front, but he JUST went back to work after 3 months off! Bah!

So we get to wait until this weekend... When they -totally- won't need it any more. Ahh, great timing. LOL.
At least he hasn't been out anymore lately.

Quick question: when their eyes open, do you find that they smarten up and don't fall out? Or do they fall out, and wander further just because they can see?

Some smarten up and don't fall out - others seem to plan to far out and wander further.....

I've never seen babies out of their nest before they had their eyes open really. Maybe I should measure the wire at the front of the hutch just in case. How small should it be?

I think 1/2 by 1 inch is good for baby saver wire? I don't know the exact measurements... 1 by 1 would probably be too big, however.

Everyone's eyes were getting crusty so I went ahead and opened them. Cleaned out the nest. 8D Everything's in order for when they decide it's time to get out. LOL.

I hate baby escapes. As soon as I check the nestbox and see that there is one missing it makes me very anxious. In my current litter of ND's my smoke pearl buck got out of his nestbox and his mother cage and somehow got into the cage with my mini rex buck. Luckily the mini rex decided to be nice to him-- and at least I found him at all. There are many things in my rabbitry to go behind and around and under where I may not find them. It's very scary.
Best of luck with your escape artist babies! Lol, I can't wait to see the personality on that one when it grows up :)
