My son is 17.5 and has received notice that he will get an academic award for excellence in a few weeks. Any seniors meeting this high GPA get the award. They have a big ceremony, guest speaker, reception and all that. The invitation to the event says: DRESS ATTIRE

Would you assume suit then? or shirt and tie with dress pants? I'm thinking suit.

With suit in mind........ what would be good for him so he doesn't look stupid? LOL!

I can't afford a $500 suit. I really like the all black suit look but is that out? We are so not in that sort of stuff at all. Hubby wears a uniform - not suits to work. He suggested Luke wear his western suitcoat (OMG NO!) and Luke would probably do it since that's something he could wear to show horses LOL! NO NO NO! not for real life!

HELP :)

BTW he's been accepted at Indiana University - we aren't sure if he's going there or not tho.....

if not a suit, what about a sport coat (i think thats what they are...) or something? i know to homecomming most guys just wear dress pants, dress shirt and tie.

my brother is 15 and just wears what my mom buys him, lol. he doesn't care how he looks, i even have to bug him to shave his few scraggily hairs on his chin, lol.

oh and tell him congrats on getting into Indiania!.... woah WEIRD are they in the big ten? cause my sister carries the indiana flag..... i am waiting to hear from Michigan state, but on my application status it says they are waiting on my high school transcript which I KNOW my school sent like two weeks ago :X.

My school- small town/farm area- guys would wear a tie but no coat. It might be different where you are but where I'm from teenage boys aren't expected to wear suits to something like that. Save money for the college bills, ya know?

Does he have friends that are going? What are they wearing?

And congrats to him!

Thanks all :) Luke has brown eyes and light brown hair.

I think I might email his counselor to see what they mean by "dress attire" since that's a very gray description. I don't know who - if any - of his friends are getting the award. They don't announce them until after the award ceremony.

I don't mind buying him a suit but with the economy so bad it's hard to justify a lot of money for something he won't use much.

Yes, IU is a big ten school :) as well as Purdue. He's going to apply to Purdue and a couple of other schools. The problem with other schools is that it's so much more expensive to go to out of state universities and He already gets like $5000 in scholarships from IU at this point - maybe more. Plus I have a niece at IU and one at Purdue :) IU is about 1.5 hours from here and Purdue is less than an hour.

Oh and colleges are bombarded right now with applications. I hope you get into Michigan state. What are you wanting to major in? He's thinking medicine (anesthesiologist) but that can change of course.

My brothers and dad all got suits last week as JoS Banks because they were on sale for below cost because the economy is so bad. I would consider getting him one if you think he is full grown. Suits don't change much and it is always good to have a suit for when the occasion calls.

Also check out local second hand or thift stores, you would be amazed what you'll find. My hubby found a suit for a wedding there for $15 when we were broke. He still wears that suit...5 years later.

I was going to suggest calling his advisor on what exactly "dress attire" means. My guess was going to be suit and tie only because he is getting a very honorable award which means he is in the top ten percent (?) of his class. (Way to go!!!! :biggrin2:)

I also agree with pamnock about going to Penny's for their suits. I know he has some growing/filling-out to do yet, so a nicer suit that could be let out at the shoulders might work. Personally, I would pick a color that he could wear to an interview like grayish or blue. All-black looks too much like he would going to a funeral. Have him try a few on... when you find the right style/color you will know because his face will show it. Even if you don't plan on buying from that store in particular, at least you will have an idea of what you are after.

Hope that helps,

myheart

Saw my BF's sister's man in this outfit recently:
Khaki-tan pants, Navy blue sport jacket, light blue shirt under, tan/brown tie.
Looked pretty smart!
(and that way, it's only a sports-jacket)

If you go to the salvation army/consignment store (we have Value Village up here...?) you can always get that suit tailored to fit (save some money there!) Nate just got a suit for his aunt's funeral... I'm not a fan, due to the orientation of the collar... It's more dinner-jacket, with a sash-like collar ... too formal /ball/oscars http://businessshrink.biz/psycholog...n-expert-on-how-to-dress-to-impress-and-when/

I would rather that there be the two wing-like breasts, like this: http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/11620446/Mens_Suits_Shirts_Ties.html
That way, he'll be able to use it when he goes for interviews and whatnot...

This is an interesting writeup from a place in your state (hopefully close by?)

Nice black pants, a chemise, and if he wants, a solid t-shirt under, leaving the top 2-3 buttons on the chemise unbuttoned. That way, he's clean enough, not overdoing it if it's not a full dressy thing, and it won't cost you 500$ :)

Too informal for the occasion. The young men at this sports awards banquets should be in suit and tie and the invitation suggests. I buy a suit every year for my young son to wear to a banquet - there are many discount stores where good buys can be found ;)

Here's a random example that I found on the internet of a youth banquet and their attire . . .

Wow , we never had anyone wearing suits at school when I was there, not even the teachers let alone students. I know I'm 'old' now and it's been many years since I was at school, but if any of my male friends would have been asked to wear dress attire, they'd have gone in clean black pants and a stylish shirt (untucked). Something silky or shimmery to add flair.

I love a man/young man in a suit, I think it's great that over there they get to dress in that sort of thing for school, makes them look tidy and mature. Not like the dingle-heads I remember from my highschool days that's for sure.

I would go looking for something second hand too, amazing what you can find for cheap that someone else didn't want.

Then again, at 17 he might not grow that much? It might be worth getting him a mid-range suit, because although he won't wear it every day he will use it again. Think of job interviews, other smart occasions, posh weddings, etc.

I'd say go for a black, maybe pinstripe with a nice shirt underneath. Steely grey shirt and black tie might look nice.

I don't think he will grow much more either, but he will have a lot of filling out to do. We must think of him as a Flemmish Giant who won't have all of the fullness for until he is a year to a year and a half old. :biggrin2:When he reaches 24-25 years old, he will be full-grown and need more room in the shoulders and back. It is amazing what happens in those fewextra years for both young men and young women.

LOL! He'll probably lose some weight at school next year when he has to WALK more than sit in a car!

You are ALL AWESOME! Thank you so much. I am just not secure in this stuff. Women I can handle. Funny thing since I used to interview people for jobs but I didn't have to choose for a young guy.

His counselor must have been out today as she hasn't emailed me back - but I am going with the suit. Funny thing is, I love that khaki pants, blue suitcoat, and shirt/tie thing! It's less dressy in a sense but more appropriate for a young man. I've seen that look a lot - just forgot!

He's getting the award for having a very high GPA - it will be a random amount of kids - depending upon what all of their grades are. It could be 10% or 20% or so.

Now, I need to figure out what I am going to wear! YIKES! Lexi needs a dress too I guess (or at least a new dressy outfit).....

Believe me tho - they don't wear suits TO school..... LOL! and I thought of JCPenney's and looked at some of their stuff. I think I'll pop over there tomorrow and see what they have in stock - maybe talk to their salesman for that department. I like that they will alter if necessary. Luke has HUGE shoulders!

I always find that weird, I had to wear a god awful shoulder-pad emblazoned blazer and itchy jumper from the age of 11 to 16! And one of my close friends still has to wear a suit (of his choice) to school. Our school is really not strict on sixth form uniform. He should consider himself lucky he doesn't have to wear a suit to school!
