A friend of mine called me today...seems she took in a rabbit from a family that was...unable to care for it. Other buns in the litter died from eating lettuce is my understanding.

She does not know what kind of pellets the bun is on, but believes they came from petsmart. They are just green with no colored or other crap in them.

So...I said not to worry about lettuces or treats and just to keep pushing hay (she has a back round with horses) .

They will be looking into a vet for where they are, told her about HRS, Rabbitsonline, Horse supply store hay, litter box, cardboad & pine cones for free toys...

Asked about the poo and there is no cecals seen, the reg poo looks as it should with piles. She eats well but will dump the bowl if you fill it up. lol....Drinks good and will even rattle the bottle when it is empty to get her attention.

That is about what I said I think...and so I am asking if anyone has suggestions please throw out ideas.

Also here is a pic...anyone have an idea about what breed?

Thanks all!

we use Timothy Complete pellets from Petsmart and also give our bunnies all the timothy hay they can eat--if their manger is close to empty it gets stuffed--sometimes three times a day. Don't know what breed she is but she's is a beautiful bunny.

Aw, there is my baby bun-bun :)

Thank you so much for bringing me here and starting this thread! I really appreciate it :)

Thank you so much, Nancy. I wrote down the Petsmart pellets, and I'm going to go check them out tomorrow. And thank you so much, she really is very pretty and very sweet. We love having her in our family :)

looks like a red satin, which would be an adult weight of around 8 or 9 pounds (my chaucer is a satin, just a different color)

they are a great breed, i am totally enjoying having mine and hope that you love your new little girl!

btw, she is SOOO cute!

Katt,
She feels about 9 pounds. I just went to look up the Satin breed, and she does actually look more like that the one I thought she was lol.

I am enjoying her, and have a feeling she will be 'my' bunny :p Which is totally fine hahaha. Right now I'm trying to bond with her, but she is a bit shy and skittish. Little steps here and there. Although she has gotten a lot better since we got her just a few days ago. I talk to her whenever I walk past her cage, and will open it if I am going to be in that area for an extended period of time. She has now started coming to the open cage door and she recognizes my footsteps and voice. YAY! My husband thinks I'm completely nuts, but I talk to all my animals like they're my kids (just ask Em up there, she had to listen to me put my dog in time out today! lol).

Thank you so much! And thank you for your help on her breed!

Hey Sam...

Hope things are going well with your new girl..you will have to share pics of the other buns when they come!

(Lionhead fan here lol)

RO is a great resource,..look around at the forums and just ask anything you need to...everyone here is pretty nice...

"Throwing hay" at rabbits is actually the best thing to do in prevention of an upset tummy. If the previous pellet is unknown and there is concern over switching to a new pellet, then a diet consisting mainly of hay will be safest. Then the new pellet can be introduced slowly.

For the average house rabbit, hay should be the majority of the diet any ways. Pellets should only be enough to supplement vitamins and maintain weight, so not much is needed. Different for show or production bunnies who are breeding and require more for energy for reproduction.

For rabbits who are starved, the best approach to bringing them back up to weight is to start by feeding all hay. Then slowly introduce pellets and and other foods. If a starved rabbit gains weight too quickly, they can develop fatty liver disease which can be deadly. Nice and slow does the trick.
