Ok I should start with a little background before I ask my questions. First I got Harvey July 3rd of this year and he got along ok with the cats. He would circle them and they'd run away haha. Anyway I was going to get him neutered two weeks after I got him, on a Monday. Well the stinker on the Friday before decided to pick a fight with the cat (chasing him this time and getting under the cat's belly to bite the cat). The cat ran of course into the bedroom and I went after them to rescue one or the other. Out of my sight the cat had gotten Harvey in his left ear. I didn't see any wounds but he was holding his ear funny, but acting normal. Saturday as I am leaving work I gave him some romaine and a little bit of celery. I come home to work to find that he had bad bad poops and he was really not feeling well. I got him to the er later that weekend, they gave him fluids and some antibiotics and told me to see his regular vet. I was going to bring him to get neutered monday (which was put on hold of course) but they let me bring him in for the ear instead.

So I get there, I tell the vet his story and his ear hurts, he wasn't eating or drinking normally and he wasn't very active. He mostly stayed in a corner. So she looks at his ear and feels around and says oh he probably just has some bruising. Which I thought was odd. So we go home and I make sure to watch his ear, cause he is still not holding it right. Thrusday it's looking swollen and he still isn't eating all that much. I take him back and she give me 10ml of Baytril + Dextrose (1/2ml twice daily orally). He gets that for about 9 days 5 of which I was camping for. I had him boarded at the vets since my friend who was going to watch the cats isn't comfortable with rabbits.

Well at the end his ear is still swollen but he's acting like himself now that he was off of the baytril. When he was taking the Baytril I notice his guts was very gurgly. The swelling has gone down a little but some of the scratches he got were starting to leak pus. The soonest I could get him back to the vet was today, since I just got paid today and I had no money anyway.

Today at the vet, she tells me well it doesn't look good and would could try another round of a different antibiotic, but most likely his ear would have to come off. I opted to try more meds. This time he's on Tylan 2 oz (1/2 ml twice daily orally until gone). Also she told me to get betadine (I think thats what she called it) to soak his ear. Soak would be hold a soaked towel with a dilute betadine to his ear.

Now on to my questions and concerns.
Does it sound like this vet did everything that could have been done? I've gotten very mixed feeling going there. But they don't charge a lot and money's been tough, my hours have been cuts, etc.

Taking his ear off seems rather extreme, especially since it seems he's holding it better and moves it around more than he had. I really want to get a second opinion from the vet who saw my gecko after this second round of meds if doesn't help. If it does have to come off I can't afford it and if I can't find the money I might have to rehome him. Which I would hate to do since I've become attached to him.

What more should I do for him? What if he starts not eating again because of the Tylan?

Honestly I feel terrible. I'm usually good with animals and I've had poor Harvey for a short time and I could even keep him from getting hurt. I doubt I will see this vet again.

Yeah that's what I thought, but I have so little experience on rabbits. Hmmm so now I'm thinking. Should I take him now, or keep trying the meds?

Trying not to stress out in front of him.

Ooooh just in case, any one in the Sacramento area know a good vet?

Cat scratches/ biteshave occurred with other members rabbitsand this can be very serious for the rabbit

It is very clear that the vet that you have has no clue how to treat a rabbit for an infection caused by something as serious as a cat bite.
The rabbit should be on serious antibiotics like chlorampenical and/or bicillin injections as an example and this should be happening very very soon.
I will give you the list of vets for your area but I still suggest that you make calls to the vets first to make sure that the trip is not going to be for nothing ; your rabbit needs serious treatment for this ASAP

Yeah I had thought so. I just hope that this vet hasn't wasted too much time and that he won't have to lose the ear. Thing is I got the vet's number from the HRS of Sacramento's website. I'm going to try Bird and Pet Clinic of Roseville. I've had good luck with them for other animals.

Are there some good questions I should ask when I call?

I hate to stress you out further, but I'd take him into emergency for some serious antibiotics, fluids and monitoring?

If not, do you have Baytril left? I'd combo it with the Tylan.

A lot of vets would have treated him the same way, but unfortunately history is showing that it doesn't work. Cat bites need to be treated very aggressively.

How is he?

sas

Well, he's mad at me at the moment. He hates getting the meds. I don't have any Baytril left. He is eating and drinking ok. I had first taken him to the ER in the very beginning when he was not good. I however can't afford to do that again. :( But he's behaving normal. So I have an appoint monday with a different vet who does see a lot of rabbits.

Just last night he in fact stole some romaine from me haha.

I think he just got scratched not bitten, but I'm not sure with all that hair.
