hey everyone this is my first forum post! so i made a NIC about 2 years ago, it has 3 levels and has linoleum flooring. i have had many problems with this set up. first of all Sophie does not even use the 2nd or 3rd floor, she never has reached the 3rd and gave up on the 2nd months ago. my friend helped me create the cage and i should have took more control over the project but i didnt, but i do not like this set up. the other problem i have with the linoleum flooring is that Sophie is slipping constantly, it has stopped A LOT but i still dont feel comfortable with her slipping and not being able to hop and run unless shes out of her cage. just so everyone knows before jumping on me for how long i waited i am 20 years old and i was 19 at the time and i am having financial problems at the moment so that has been what kept me from re doing this earlier, i am currenctly on unemployment and have been for a while so i have not had enough income until now to purchase some flooring. buying your own groceries really drains your budget at any age, especially when i am only getting $61 a week while desperately looking for a job. so now i am going to take apart the two top levels and create a longer and more spacious one level condo. i have been looking at flooring options here :

i was looking at coroplast too and that seems like a good idea but my problem is that i want something that wont cause her to slip anymore, it KILLS me to see that. i know its not good for her and that makes me unhappy. i have seen some pretty good flooring options with grips BUT sophie is a NOTORIOUS chewer and im scared she will chew the actual grips built in to the flooring. i cannot put anything on top because she will eat and chew her way through newspaper or cardboard in an hour or even less, plus im looking for flooring that wont have to be used in conjunction with anything else anyways and act as a permanent comfortable floor that will be easy to clean. Sophie is also not very litter trained. she has a HUGE cat litterbox and uses it quite a lot, but she also poops on the flooring as well very frequently, so until i can properly litter train her in her more comfortable, spacious cage cleaning will be in issue in the beginning and possibly the future as well.
i also started dating someone and i have been back and fourth from their house and mine so i also want the cage to be big enough where i wont feel guilty leaving her in it overnight or sometimes for 2 days at a time until i get home and cant let her out.
before anyone jumps on me for my situation i RESCUED sophie 2 years ago from an ABUSIVE owner who would get her high from blowing weed smoke in her face and who smoked cigarettes in the house and had a small cage with barely any room and the bare minimum of one tiny food dish, one tiny water bottle, and ZERO toys, she also was never let out of the cage, and there was a giant, loud, aggressive dog that lived in the home as well, the owner actually joked about how she didnt even want her and she was "too much work" so of course i took sophie from her ASAP when she offered with no prior rabbit experience at all. im trying my hardest so please now that you know my situation i hope you dont judge me as harshly. so can anyone give me any options? or advice?

this also seems like a good idea

the cleanup might be easier as soft poos and urine wouldnt get caught in the grip designs but i dont know how much of a grip these would provide or if the design is "pebble" which would be pretty difficult to clean, and i need to drill holes into these materials as well to zip tie the flooring to the cage to keep it in place.

I would think the easiest solution would to get some steel wool & scuff up the linoleum so it's not slippery AND move the shelves closer together or add ramps from level to level.

If you are looking for rubber flooring and you have a feed store or tractor supply near you, they usually carry horse stall rubber mats. Usually they are 4x6 and are 3/4", which is super heavy, but sometimes they carry the lighter ones that are 1/4" and cost around $40. I did find a car cargo rubber mat that was maybe 3x4 and about 1/16" thick, at walmart for around $13. It would probably work ok as long as your rabbit couldn't get to the edges to chew it. What ever one you end up getting, just make sure it doesn't have any raised texture like a diamond grip, as that will just make it easy for your rabbit to chew on it.

You could also use fleece over your linoleum. You just use binder clips to secure it to the floor, and the fleece is considered one of the safer fabrics for rabbits.

thanks guys for the suggestions, yes i just hard about the fleece, she WILL eat it and rip it up i know for a fact so is it still dangerous for them to consume fleece? and those are good suggestions but i am going to redisgn the whole thing to one larger level for now, i find she likes to run and roam and lay down more than she does hop to other levels, plus i just dont feel safe knowing she could fall even with ramps, i could always add on later but for now i want to just make a large one floor condo, but as far as the links i left do you think she will be able to chew on those? they look inverted to me. as far as the steel wool goes i think i would rater spend a little more $ at this point and get a REALLY good floor like one of those links has, i have linoleum flooring but i bought it at home depot and they are large stickers attached to plywood and they are not in the greatest shape, ill take a pic later as well so you can see what im dealing with better.

Because your bun is a chewer (I have one that is as well) and needs work on litter training, what I would do is take a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot and look around at what they might have available. Even if you didn't buy from them they might have something similar to what you are looking at buying. But I also rarely buy anything offline, I prefer being able to see exactly what I am getting.
