We had an ad hocâbunny eventâ out on the lawn here yesterday in conjunction with a yard sale, seeing as so many people stop and ask about Dill and Sherrywho watch from the porch. These peoplesee my bunnies hanging out, using a litter box, coming when they're called, etc, and they're in love! (They all say they never thought about a rabbit before).
ThenDawn brought over her four for a bonding session in the front yard, and again, tons of people asked if they were for sale. It was an all-day petting zoo. (I get tons of walk-by traffic).
So day 2, I put my threefosters out in the kennel, and again, tons of people asked aboutâbuyingâ them. I had asked Dawn to print out some SARS application forms (I donât have a printer), but she didnât get a chance and it was pretty late anyway, but I think we could have landed several good homes for some bunnies if it would have been a directed effort.
At least two people were willing to fill out a form, have a house check and hand over a deposit that same day. (I wastelling peoplethe adoption fee would be $50 or $60 to cover the spays/neuters, they'rehappy with that. The trendy designer mutts and chihuahuas cost hundreds).I gave them my number and the SARS website address (although I may have had the address wrong). I didn't hear from them soI suspect their next stop was a pet store.
In my neighbourhood, with lots of fairly well-off,stable apartment dwellers, and in a city notorious for 'no pets' accomodations, rabbits are the perfect solution for a lot of these people. (Landlords will often allow 'caged pets').
I'mhoping to do another official event next weekend. The only problem isI don't have adoptable bunnies.
Unfortunately, my fosters are not greatfor this type of adoption, they're VERY skittish and all three are bonded, not comfortable with separating them, at least notquite yet.Not good 'newbie' bunnies.
I've made this event offer to SARS several times in the past, they never responded.
The otherorganization is the HRS chapter here, I guess I can call them.
I could also 'rescue' them from Craigslist, but sometimes I think that's just giving an irresponsible owner an easy out. I'd like to see that option be a difficult one. I'd rather see themsurrendered to a shelter and taken out from there, although depending on the shelter, it could be risky.
Ideally, I'd like totake a shot at placing bunnies who reallyneed it. I like the situation to be a step up for the bunny. But I don't think the shelters let them go to unofficial rescuers.
There isn't much time leftfor goodweather, really hate to waste thisopportunity.
Anyhoo, if there's anybunny on a euth list somewhere, if someone can get them to me, I think I can help them. At this point, I'm tempted to return the bonded three to SARS and free up the space for bunnies in more dire need.
Suggestions welcome!
