I just got a mini dwarf rabbit yesterday and itseems that he is eating his litter when i put it on asmallplate for him to use it as a litter box. His cageis big andhas lots of hay. What should I do about this? His litter is the typethat is made of old recycled newspapers that you buy at petco. Hedoesseem to eat the litter that's placed under the hay. Caneating the litter hurt him badly? Thanks for your advice.

Welcome aboard Highroller,

You definitely want to get him out of this habit. Pam gives good advice on one way to solve the problem.

You can't have him eating the litter even if it is recycled newspaperbecause he can fill up on that, not eat his pellets, hence not get thenutrition he needs leading to further problems.

It can certainly be a problem for them if the habit isn't stopped.

If by chance there's a pan underneath the cage, you could just not do the litter box thing. My newest girl startedeating her litter when I first put the box in, but I gave her a littlehay, and she seems to like that a lot better.. (good girl!)

Or you could try a different kind of litter, like pine shavings.. or eco-bedding (also at petco)

He needs a litterbox first of all. Not a plate. Even if it'ssomething like a lid to a shoebox for now if he can't get over a talllitterbox side. However, I think most babies could get overone.

When i first saw your post i thought you meant adoe was eating her litter of babies, then when you said "he" and saidyou put the litter on a plate i was getting really freakedout! Some things just take a little longer to click...:D

Is he just eating away at it or does he just nibble it. If itis just nibbling, let him be and soon he will probably leave himalone. A litter box with a wire floor over the bedding is agood idea, or try pine shavings. Just don't use cedar as itcan give them respritory problems!

Ahh it turns outthat I wasall wrong. The plate my mother put in the cage wasa plate of food! I mistaked it for litter. Sorry for wasting your time.I put the plate back in and the rabbit is doing fine. We named therabbit Happy. We named him happy because he likes to behandled. He was the nicest of the threerabbitsatpetco. The other 2 rabbits didn't seem tolike him. He loved to be handled whilethe other 2 rabbitsonly tolerated being touched and stayed together while happy would runup to the cage. Today my mother brought a stand to put the cage on andhappy loves it. He gets up on his hine legs and looks around theroom.

No need to apologize. So glad that Happy has it right!

Sounds like you're all enjoying each other's company. Happy's very lucky to have stumbled upon you.
