about 2 weeks ago (it will be 2 weeks on friday) we took mia in. she is a 3 or 4 months old lab mix puppy with a bad past. . .
. . .we have no idea about owners beyond the ones we got her from, just as we have no idea about her breed, or what she is mixed with, what the parents were like, or even the people who bred and raised the puppies. . .
the previous owners didn't want a dog at ALL. the son had been visiting his moms house when he brought a puppy home, a short time later the son returned to his dad's house leaving mia with the mom and her new husband. mia had basically 2 toys (as we got all her stuff when they gave her to us): a rope tug, and a bone chewy. she was caged for 9+ hours a day with no bathroom breaks (she was caged all night, let out in the morning, returned to the cage for the day and let out when at home. . .) when out of her cage she was left to play with herself for the most part.
when i got her she was so starved for human attention that she crawled into ANYONES lap just to be close to them. she was also very, VERY thin (they were feeding her adult dog food. . .and it was a bad brand of food. . .). also the way she lapped up water the first few days makes us believe her water intake was rather limited. she didn't know her name (at 3 months most puppies will respond to a name, but she didn't know hers), she wasn't potty trained, and was so unsocialized.
the owners completely lied to us. . .they said she was pure lab (very evident she isn't), that they had only had her for 2 weeks (and yet more then 1/2 for the 50 pound dog food was gone) and the she was potty trained (yeah, right), and that she was a calm puppy that didn't have problems (maybe they would have realized her problems if they had spent time with her.
so we took her in, even if it was only for a short time till a forever home could be found. . .well, i fell in love with her and had hoped to keep her. . .but as days past, we say more and more of her issues, and with me leaving for college this fall, my parents (and i agree with them) decided that she really needs a different household (my dad works all day- not home to later then 6 pm, my brother is at school, and football- not home till after 7 pm on most days, and my mom works midnights and sleeps during the day) the puppy would have to be caged most of the day and night without my home to take care and watch over her. . . it is not a lack of responsiblity. . .because we all love this dog, it is what is best for her. . .
so now, i am on the hunt for an experianced dog owner that is looking for a terribly smart, but problemed puppy. . .
anyone know anyone? i live in michigan, and willing to meet partway if they live in michigan.. .
she will be a great dog, she already is learning her name, picking up on potty training, learning 'no', 'come' and has grasped 'sit'. . .she is smart and playfull and a quick learning. . .i am deeply attached to her already, but have to do what is best for mia and what is best is putting her in a home that will be there for her most of the day. . .not a girl that leaves for weeks on end with a family that is currently to busy to help this puppy. . .
help spread the word. . .she is a great dog under all the neglect. . . it is like i told my mom "we took her in and started her in the right direction, now we need someone to take her forever and work with her"
