I am going to be cutting my hair and and donating it in my great-grandmas name. She died 17 years ago of heart failure because of lung cancer. It will be 18 years this year. I still cry when I think of her. This year also 19 years that we lost her brother to cancer. 21 years ago we lost her sister to cancer.

We have had several family members fight cancer and win since than. My great-aunt has been fighting it for a few years, we have come close to losing her several times. She just keeps fighting.

Anyways you can see that cancer has been a part of my life for most of it. I hate it with a passion.

On to my hair.....this was a few months ago...

Did I talk you into it? LOL!

I think you should do enough for the first locks.... plus a little maybe? They like having a bit more hair to make some other styles.

I also think you have very pretty hair but I bet you will love having it a bit shorter and maybe able to do some cool things with it.

How to do it....must be 10" long....

Their guidelines:

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS
  • Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
  • Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
  • Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist.
  • Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable.
  • Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable.
  • We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
  • Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.
  • Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.
  • Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
  • 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
  • Please Note: Shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs. Although the shorter hair cannot be used in the hairpieces, it still greatly helps to reduce costs.
  • Gray hair will be accepted and sold to offset the manufacturing costs.
HOW TO DONATEhair donation form, or write your name and address on a separate sheet of paper and include inside the envelope.[*]All hair donations must be mailed to Locks of Love at: 2925 10th Avenue N, Suite 102
Lake Worth, FL 33461-3099

Please be sure to use the entire zip code when mailing. Thank you!

There's also another one that collects hair for cancer patients and they require 9 inches I think..... I'll see if I can find that info.

You go Girl!!! I cut 15" off of mine back in January. I cried for a bit then realized that I liked it. It is now just above my bra.

Yikes! I can not belive you did that. I love your hair!

I've donated to Locks of love! A local hair salon even gives you the haircut free when you do that. Getting ready to do it again, I've been saving after last time :).
My goal is to keep on letting my hair grow till it's long enough, then donate again.

I may or may not do that.

I recently decided to grow my hair out to donate it as well. So last time I had my hair cut, my hairdresser just shaped it a bit but left all the length.

It should take me about a year and a half to two years to grow my hair out. I've had hair as long as down past my waist and short enough to spike. So I'm not concerned with having long hair then chopping it all off, I actually really like the excitment of the change.

I'm really luck that my face can take just about any length of hair nicely. One of my favourite hair cuts was from back in grade 10 after I had just had my hair cut.

I've got a bit of bleached streaks that I've got to grow out as well. I've got about 3 inches of non-bleached hair now. The transistion is barely noticable to, so that makes me happy. I'm actually enjoying having darker hair again.

Oh Jade, This is so awesome. Many are going from cancer.

My sister passed away from heart failure due to hodgkins disease in November. I truly miss her, my GodMother died of lung cancer, my husband's mother died from cancer as well as his grandfather.

I am so happy you are doing this. i want to do it for my sister. My cousin Amy is doing the American Cancer Relay at the end of the month in memory of my sister.

Please show pics of your new do. You got long beautiful hair. I am now crying because it makes me feel good seeing others do it.

I think my great-grandma would be proud. I know my family is.

I miss her so much. I have a hard time remebering her. So I ask non-stop about her. I do have some memories but not as many as I like. One of the hardest days for me was when I got married. I wish she was there so bad. She was the glue in our family. We are still close but not like when she was alive. It was just to hard after she passed.

I have an idea but want to talk to my family first. Than I will mention it here.
