My boy Bunbun picked up fleas and, in a freak occurance, got tapeworms from the fleas. Being the overprotective "mom" that I am, I was horrified! And took him to the vet, along with the rest of the "family" in case they'd picked them up too. (they turned out to be clean--he was the only one)

Well, trying to get the poor boy healthy again has been a nightmare. Ibecame a militant "mom" when the vet badgered me into using Revolution for the fleas (without telling me it hadn't been tested on rabbits), promised it was safe, and it burned a four-inch patch on his shoulder--looked like 3rd-degree burns, lost all his skin and hair. I was absolutely furious! So I went on the hunt for natural cures so he would never go through that again.

His hair is growing back--I treated the chemical burn area with tea tree oil and it worked fast! Then I put olive oil on the healing skin and combed him daily to get rid of any leftover fleas. After losing everything, most of his skin and hair is back, but he has lost weight and energy. I'm going to try brewer's yeast as a flea preventive, if I can get him to eat it, but does anyone else have a safe energy booster/nutrition supplement for an older bunny?

Actually, I think maybe he's just depressed because he hasn't been able toget outwhile I disinfected his run--took meover a month! Because he sure looked happy tonight. Dirty, but happy!

Have you used the brewers yeast before? I bought some (It is in tablet form)They wouldn't eat the tablets should I be crushing them or what? A friend who is a dog breeder swears bythem, but can get a tablet into them. And lastly, will they hurt my Buns ? --- Kim

Hi Rabbitgirl,

Pick up some NutriCal.http://www.millpledge.com/preparations/nutrical.htmalso check outhttp://www.pbshorsehealth.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/dogcat/nutrical.html?E+scstore

It's very safe for rabbits. I posted both sites because Iwanted to show you that it comes in a couple of different boxes so thatyou know what it looks like. You can usually pick it up at apet feed/supply store, if not, buy it online, or check with an animalhospital and find out if they'd sell you a tube.

Good luck with your little one. I have full confidence in yougetting him back to shape. Thank you for this post. It's educational for all of us.

Keep us posted.

I used the powder. I just tried it last night onhis food. So if he ate it I'll keep doing that otherwise I'll sprinkleit on him so he has to lick it off.

The thing that scares me is that he licked the Revolution after I putit on. I asked the vet techif it was ok, and she said noproblem--but after what happened, what if his tongue got fried too andthat's why he's not as hungry? grrrrrrrrrrr

Lots of vets know NOTHING about bunnies!!! But they won't admit it.

"Lots of vets know NOTHING about bunnies!!! But they won't admit it."

I know. That's why I started studyingthingson my own, Rose, and the mainreason why Ifound these forums. Often times, the vets knowledge is verylimited. There's not a lot of time they spend onrabbits in veterinary school, but I hear it's improving.

Thosewho have arabbit saavy vet arereally lucky.

That is why I consider myself so lucky. My friendis a rabbit vet and brreder and that is about all she does and hastrained many people during the summer on care of rabbits. It also helpsthe rescue because they get lots of physicals and care by the soon tovet students. We also have 2 more excellent rabbit vets-owners so close

Wow, it's awesome to have a vet that is just for bunnies!!!

Bunbun WAS depressed! I let him out this morning (mud and rainnotwithstanding!),let him get dirty, dusted him with brewer'syeast afterwards, and he ate like a horse! And moved better, lookedmore alert, younger, and happier.

Despite the fact that I tripped on him at least three times when he ran between my legs!

I think he's getting better. He always just lived for the moment whenhe could get out every morning and run, and the treatment andquarantine was really hard on him. It seemed like he lost his sparklewhen he couldn't get out. Now I see it again, finally.

His "girlfriend" rejected him last night, but I think that's becauseshe's pregnant with his babies. Lil' Chester's on the way! :D
