My sweet bun, Mojo, was neutered today and as far as I can tell, he is behaving fairly normal for an animal that just underwent surgery, but I have some small, non-medical concerns.

He seems alert and aware and all that jazz, but when he went to rest in his burrow after I brought him home, he was really still(for a long time) and didn't respond to my voice(which he usually does if I'm near the cage). It worried me a little, so of course I reached in and gave him some rubs on his back, and he still didn't respond right away. And although I didn't get that horrible, sinking, worst thing happening kind of feeling, it worried me even more as he is usually so alert, so I reached in a little farther and after a little bit more pets and rubs, he wiggled and shifted awake...

So the question is, was he just a bit drugged still? He seems fine now and has even come out to lay around in one of his favourite spots in the living room, but has anyone else had a rabbit practically play dead on them after a neutering???

I'm also curious about his appetite, he has eaten, but not much, and I'm making sure to give him lots of delicious parsley and such to tempt him, but usually he goes to town on that stuff... I know lack of appetite post surgery isn't uncommon, but to what extent? Any suggestions?

I understand and am aware of standard post-surgery care, but if anyone has any unusual advice or tid-bits that I may not be aware of, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your help! :)

As he was just neutered today, he is still a bit groggy. This should wear off soon, but if he is still like that in the morning you might want to call the vet.
Does he have pain medication? You might want a give him a small dose to take the edge off. Rabbits can hide pain, so they might not look like they are in pain, they are. Males do tend to do better as the neuter is less invasive, but there can still be pain. If you don't have any pain medication, get some tomorrow at the vet.

Some rabbits to recover faster than others. As long as he is eating something, it is a good start. Make sure he continues to eat and drink. It may take a couple days before he is eating more normal amounts and acting more like himself.

Thank you!

I did ask them about pain meds, but as they use the least invasive method of neutering with bunnies(their words, not mine), they said he probably won't need it, unless of course something goes wrong. The vet said he will probably call before the weekend to see how he's doing, I'm sure if something doesn't sound right I can get some meds to help him out.

Thank you very much for the help! :)

I think some are just more sensitive than others. The only one that ever worried us was our little male Chin Mini Rex. He didn't eat for almost a day and he was a little food monster. The next day he was fine though.

Always found when you brought them home that the relief of being home, stress of the surgery, and just the security of knowing that they are home and safe, most bunnies just have a good nap. I agree he is probably still abit groggy, humans respond the same way, seem to need alot of sleep after a stressing situation. If he has attempted to eat and drink that is a good sign. Just keep offering him titbits and he should come around. Poor little bun-bun
