Metacam and Deramaxx, arthritis medicines for dogs, may contribute to heart attacks and other ailments. Leyna Nguyen reports.

The report just interviews two dog owners and a vetand talks about potential side effects. One dog vomited andhad diarrhea, another had a heart attack. Also mentioned werekidney and GI issues.

Drug companies responded by basically saying the drugshadimproved the quality of life for millions of dogs, indicating(or at least hinting) that the estimated 3000 dogs affected were anormal percentage when it came to bad reactions.

Ever since Pipp appeared to have a kidney issue while taking Metacam(from being dehydrated at the time), I've been using itsparingly. But it did get her eating in the firstplace. Twice.

IMO, like any drug, it should be used with caution.

Well, oralMetacam made Peanut stop eating:dunno It's one of the mostcommon side effects, which is why if the rabbits ever need it I'll askfor the shot to avoid GI issues.

I think it's important that owners are aware of the side effectsand potential risks, so that they can balance the options.
