I just recently received my bunny and he has large amounts of mats in his fur. How can I get them out? They're very close to his skin so I don't want to cut them out if I don't have to. I was told he was a long haired mini lop but that's just what she called him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The best option would be to find someone who has a good set of clippers and can help you get the mats out. A dog groomer who bunny experience will be good. A rabbit savvy vet is also a good option. A breeder with long haired bunnies can also be good.
Getting rid of the mats is good. It is not comfortable to have matting like that and can make moving difficult. They also prevent air from getting to the skin which can lead to problems. If left unchecked, they can from over the whole body and then you have to do something.

You can try to get the majority of it with scissors if the rabbit is friendly. Also a dematter made for dog or cat hair works pretty well to break apart the mat. If you aren't familiar with grooming though it might be best to take the bunny to a professional and maybe get some pointers from them.
