I had a double root canal tonight.

Both of my lower canines.

The whole thing took 2 hours.

My whole head was numb from all of the injections....lips, tongue, nose, ears.
They just couldn't get the teeth numb.

I chewed my lip up on one side and it's all swollen.

I'm miserable right now, as the local anesthesia is starting to wear off. Got lottsa pain pills though.
At least I can drink now without dribbling all down the front of me.

This was just the first step of a major reconstruction jawb (sp ;)).
In 3 weeks I have 7 extractions, a bunch of bone graphs, and 2 implants installed.

woohoo :?

This part sounds horrible, but I bet the end result is going to be fantastic. Here's to a gag-free, pain medication wonderland for the next three weeks! Hope you remember some of this time (My dad sure didn't with his oral surgeries). Look out for your loved ones telling you about all the funny things you said/did while HIGH on your meds.:biggrin2:

Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery!

Holy Moly, Jim! You poor thing. The root canals shouldn't have been that bad, eek. But the upcoming sounds scary, bone graph?

You're getting 7 extractions? Why are they doing root canals then? Are you having all your teeth pulled? I don't understand keeping just a few if so many are being pulled. Root canals are expensive! Honestly, from what I've been through and heard, root canals are only performed when you want to keep the teeth. But if many are being extracted, it kinda doesn't make sense.:? It's cheaper to extract.

I wish you the best of luck, this sounds like a rough go.

The root canal was only so bad because they couldn't get me numb enough.

I'm going to an oral surgeon for the graphs and extractions. I'll be asleep for that part...thank goodness.

The root canals were done so that implants can be put into those teeth.
The implants are going to be used to anchor a temporary partial for now.

There's very little bone holding in the remaining 7 teeth.
They'll be extracted and bone graph will be put in.

The back molars on both sides are already gone.

Eventually, 2 more implants will be put in the back and I'll have a complete lower plate afterwards.
It'll be removable, but will clip onto the implants to hold it in place.
:biggrin2:
I'm looking forward to eating all the things I haven't been able to eat for the past couple of years.

Holy molars, Batman!!

And I thought I was justified in whining about dental woes. Jim, I really feel for you...it must've been rough going through that with the anesthetic not fully working for you. (Did you leave grip imprints in the chair? I sure would have!) Take advantage of those post-procedure pain meds...gotta love 'em when you really need 'em! I made the mistake a while back in not taking the prescrip. meds when the freezing began to wear off after some minor dental surgery, thinking, 'Oh, this isn't so bad'...and then suddenly it hit me like a truck slamming into the side of my head.Since thenI've learnedto take them before the dire pain sets in. ;)

Sounds like you're in for quite a bit of work, but once it's finished you'll be so glad you had it done. You'll have to let me know what the implants are like, as I've often wondered about them. I know that somewhere down the road I might have to have something like that too. (Radiation wreaks havoc on teeth...whereas I used to go to the dentist twice a year and never had any problems, now - post-radiation - I have to go eight times a year; every 3 months I have to have my teeth cleaned, and the appt has to be split into two visits, because I have to be frozen. Radiation has left my teeth eroded and extremely sensitive. Actually I just went two days ago and still am trying to recover from a sore jaw as a result.)

Feel better soon!

Oh my, that sounds very painful. I would prescribe a large bottle of at least 18 year old Scotch and a straw. Hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly.

Couldn't get numb enough? Sounds just like me! That'swhy during the root canal, they shoved a needle right down the canal to numb it, boy, did it work!:)
Ican't imagine agraph. Eek. Best of luck to you on that!

Man, I thought I was bad off, I feel so bad for you. What an ordeal!

I can't imagine getting implants, you'll have to tell me how bad it is, I've seen vids at my dentist office on them, eww. Looks very, very painful, screws in your jaw? Uh, no.:run:

Hey Jim...how're you doing? The most important thing you can do is keep your pain meds steady....don't wait until the pain gets out of hand before you start medicating. I've made that mistake, and learned from it. When's the next part of the procedure scheduled? Keeping you in prayer!

My dh would definatly sympathize with you. (As do I, of course!) He had the same problem with the anestisia (sp?) not working with his surgery either. His wasn't dental though--let's just say it was a lot further south, and he walked funny for a couple of days! :? Have fun with those pain meds, I hope they give you the "good stuff".

I don't even want to think about it. Implants are very expensive and you have to go to a specialist and there are not many specialists in Edmonton.
I should know as I have a sister-inlaw who works for one.

Pain doesn't bother me. I had four wisdom teeth pulled with a simple freezing of the mouth. It feels neat when your mouth is frozen, you can't talk, your lip feels funny, and you'redribbling like a baby. :p

By the way,I'm going to the Dentist todayto have my teeth cleaned. :biggrin2:

Thanks for the "be well" wishes!!

I stayed home yesterday....focused mainly on soup, pain meds, and sleep.

Today I went to work, but could only manage until a little after 2pm.
Spent the afternoon wrapped around pain meds.

It hurts mostly where I got all of the injections, and on the right sidewhere itwas infected.

Going to feed the buns and tuck them in early..... so that I can do the same.

I go in tomorrow to have several extractions, some bone graphs, and a couple implants.

I go to the oral surgeon first, and he'll do most of the work.
Then they're loading me in the car and off I go to the second dentist that will finish things.... for now.

I'm already taking antibiotics...and I've still got a couple of days worth of pain meds from the last time....not that they won't give me more.

Appointment is for 9:30am EST. I figure I'll be home around 1pm or so.

woohoo:tears2:

:pet:You poor thing! I hate dental work and I hate the cost of it (we don't have dental insurance!) and I need a bunch done........ I know it's awful right now but I sure hope you feel much better really soon!

*get well hug*
