OK, so two days ago my hubby and I tried to cut Nibbles' nails since he was starting to get little cuts on his ears from them. He was not having it and after about 10 minutes of struggling with the poor bun, we let him back in his cage. He was a bit skiddish the rest of the evening (even though we tried to make up for our cruelty with some carrot slices). He only came out of his cage once or twice and didn't do a whole lot (usually in the evenings he likes to be out and run around his xpen).

So yesterday we made an appointment for the vet and took him there (first time) to get the nails trimmed. The car ride was rough for him--he was shaking in his travel cage the whole time. Once we got to the vet, she trimmed his nails in about 5 minutes and we went home (poor bun still shaking). We let him back into his cage and he stayed there for the rest of the evening (no binkies for us last night!).

This morning when I went to let him out of his cage, he didn't come out! Usually he's right at the door pushing his nose through the bars and practically leaps out before I can get the door all the way down! He usually runs around, jumps, and is all over the place. After about 20 minutes he finally came out slowly and is currently flopped over against the xpen wall.

Is he just mad at us? Exhausted from yesterday's ordeal?? I feel so bad!! But we're just trying to make sure he's healthy and has trimmed nails!!

I imagine it's probably more mad than anything. To reduce the number of times he needs his nails trimmed, you could get some cement patio stones to add to his xpen, to wear the nails down naturally. You might even want to cover the entire pen floor with them! Once he's calmed down, you probably should get him used to car rides. At first, just get into the car, sit there a couple minutes, & go back inside. Once that's ok, drive around the block. And a treat in the car & right after you're home.
He WILL love you again.

Bunnies can be divas, it's part of being a prey animal. Giving the treats is good. My kids tend to enjoy being out and about a little so I always take them to the pet store after the vet to pick out a treat. I think it makes the experience more fun for them. You would need to work up to that so it's not more traumatizing though.

I agree with LakeCondo, work up to car trips so they become less frightning. For now, just let him chill out and he will come around.

Thanks everyone! We'll definitely try the suggestions for getting him used to the car and I'll see if I can find some cement stones to keep for him.

He's been a bit more friendly this afternoon (yay!) so I'm glad he's starting to forgive us :)
