I was wondering how high the chances are of producing almost proper lops by crossing a lop mix doe (father dwarf lop/mother mix breed with probably lop in it too) and a pure bred dwarf lop. I would expect some heliocopter ears of course but is there a chance of lop eared off spring. Is the lop ear gene (if there is such a thing) dominant or recessive?

I don't know genetics enough but I do know that at the RSPCA centre we recently had a litter of 4 lionlops. One had fully lop ears, two had aeroplane ears and one had fully up ears, so I would say that there is a chance of full lop ears, although they might have some movement to them which. That's based on experience as opposed to specific genetic knowledge.

Is there any reason you're asking?

They would be nice though, are you talking about your bunnies ya? Maybe put some piccies here it might make it easier for breeders to tell. :)

Magic is the one I'd consider breeding because I know her mum and dad and have a certain idea where she comes from.

Which one is Magic? :)
The one on top in the middle. The names go in order. I'm looking for a better picture in photobucket but it's somewhat slow at the moment

This is Magic on a "lop day"

I am aiming for tricoloureds so if you know anyone with a dwarf harlequin lop buck, irishbunny,.....

I've seen a few harlequins around but no lops yet. I still have a few months to search for one as I wouldn't consider breeding before February

So is Magic got lop ears? if he does then hed be a dominant L carrying a recessive l depemding on the mother so it'd be Ll and if the Doe was a purebreed she should be LL

L L

L LL LL

l Ll Ll

If that was the case you could get 1/2 lopped the other 1/2 not, but thats just some possible outcomes you could get all lopped or non lopped. But some would carry the recessive l which could get passed on if breed.

If Magic wasn't lopped he'd be ll and mum woul be LL so

L L

l LlLl

l Ll Ll

You could get all lopped but they would all have the recessive which again could get passed on..... Hoped this helped. When Rosy who was lop and fluff who wasn't had babys they had 2 that lopped out of 4?

Magic's dad is a pure lop. SHE has one ear down sometimes. Her mum may have lop in her but has errect ears. So lop is dominant then?

Domiant is the characteristics which shows up i.e lop ears, blue eyes but it depends on the parents if theyre homozygous or hetrozygous andif they carry the recessive trait.

I don't know whatwhatcategory she comes into when shes half up half down etc so I don't know what you label her but she's either ll or Ll . But If Magics dad is a pure lop and her mother might have lop makingmum ll as she has erect ears. so i'm not sure if this is correct as i'm in no means a genetics specialist but Magic must be Ll.

So if you have Ll and LL

L L

L LL LL

l Ll Ll

so you COULD end up with all lop but you dont know how many of them would be carrying the recessive erect ears. If you wanted to get all lop eared you wouldn't be able to breed Magic as theres a chance she would pass on her recessive gene.......

As long as I get some proper lops I don't mind some erect or heliocopter ears. They ar not going to be of any show quality initially (not that there are any shows where I live) but I would hope end up with some decent lops down the line

If I get this right with Lop being the dominant I can' be sure if any of the offspring with full lop ears carry the recessive erect ear gene. So I'd basically be taking my chances by picking the "loppiest" lop for further breeding....

So whatever bun has lop ears thats dominant as that shows up and any have erect thats whats dominant lol tis confusig haha. Well you could but that can only be done by a ummm something cross and that involves breeding haha. Yep so pick your loppiest lop I suppose:biggrin2:
