Litter Training

So a while back I ditched the whole litter thing and decided to let Ripley just poop on the wire in his cage as it falls through. Now though, months later, I changed my mind and wanted to put more carpet down. The wire works for him but he always was confused, switching where he wanted to go potty. So I added carpet and a litter box. The same day (right away) he began peeing in the box, but doesn't poop there. I don't mean like he'll poop around to mark, but everywhere. None in the box.

Any ideas to get him going there?
